Position Summary:

The Machinist II is proficient with at least 50% of the machines in their assigned area and only require minimal supervision. Ability to troubleshoot basic issues dealing with speeds, feeds, fixturing, part damage and tool wear. The Machinist II is able to read and interpret drawings utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) knowledge and follow company procedures to ensure quality parts machined. Able to set up and tear down jobs for their area with little supervision and oversight.


Key Results Areas:

  1. Gather documentation and ensure the machine is properly set up to produce quality parts and fixtures.
  2. Review the router for the assigned work and pull the proper tools, material, and documents needed for the job.
  3. Read, comprehend and follow the machine work instruction and appropriate drawings in order to properly setup the equipment to perform the job working with a mentor as needed.
  4. Properly set-up the job per the documentation to ensure quality is maintained, working with a mentor as needed.
  5. Ensure that the machine is free of debris and other foreign objects before starting the job to ensure equipment or parts are not damaged during the process.
  6. Ensure that the tools needed for the job are sharp and in proper condition to ensure the quality of finished product.
  7. Ensure inspection gauging is calibrated and is not overdue for calibration. If the gauge is overdue, turn the gauge into quality.
  8. Check the machine for all preventive maintenance risks such as coolant levels, spindle oil, etc.
  9. Set up on most jobs in assigned area without assistance.
  10. Visualize the job/part, understand the complexities and sequence needed to safely and accurately machine the part prior to making the first cut.
  11. Provide On-the-job training opportunities by mentoring junior machinists to assist in setup tasks.
  12. Read computer numerical control (CNC) machine software to ensure that requirements can be met and recommended changes to the Lead, Manufacturing Engineer Supervisor or Production Supervisor.
  13. Utilize Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) criteria to evaluate the drawings and prepare for the job ensuring criteria can be met and elevate concerns to a mentor.
  14. Properly machine parts/fixtures that meet specifications and quality criteria, showing proficiency on 50% of the equipment in the department.
  15. Proficient on 50% or more of the machines in assigned area.
  16. Troubleshoot basic issues, such as: speeds and feeds, fixturing, part damage, tool wear, etc. as well, as basic programming issues.
  17. Measure parts and offset machine accordingly throughout the process to ensure the quality of the product with the guidance of a mentor as needed
  18. Follow router instructions and properly sign -off on the router when complete
  19. Deburr parts and verify visual and dimensional quality requirements are maintained.
  20. Break down the job/tools, parts and store them properly to ensure their integrity and quality.
  21. Break down and properly store all inspection equipment used on the job to ensure accuracy of future measurements.
  22. Follow the Detailed Inspection Plan (DIP) to verify tolerances and visual defects are within acceptable quality levels.
  23. Manually check the part before removing from the machine and fixtures to ensure compliance to all critical and non-critical dimensions with the assistance of a mentor as required.
  24. Collaborate with more senior machinists to assist in setting up more complex jobs for on-the-job training opportunities.
  25. Mark-up as necessary, setup documentation and equipment programs to ensure the next pass repeatability and reproducibility.
  26. Properly store all parts per the router and best company practices in appropriate protective material/bins/boxes and place them in the appropriate storage area to ensure part quality.
  27. Fill out time cards per company procedures to ensure compliance.
  28. Properly set up in-process inspection equipment and tools to verify the quality of the part post production.
  29. Read, comprehend and follow the machine work instruction to properly machine the part/fixture with the assistance of a mentor as required.
  30. Collaborate with inspectors to check and verify the first article before further processing parts.
  31. Collaborate with all departments to ensure that information and data transfers effectively to meet customer needs and organizational objectives.
  32. Identify daily safety, quality, delivery cost issues and report to management in Safety/Quality/Delivery/Cost (SQDC) meetings.
  33. Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineer to identify changes in work instructions and drawings to ensure recommendations are incorporated.
  34. Collaborate with Purchasing to order parts, tools and materials from approved suppliers if items are not company stock items.
  35. Ensure safety of the employees and quality of the products throughout all processes.
  36. Able to locate the Quality Management System (QMS) procedures, have read and understand relevant procedures and are aware of all procedural changes when they occur.
  37. Assist with root cause analysis teams to ensure that safety and quality problems are properly evaluated and corrected.
  38. Compliant with all safety procedures to ensure proper protective equipment usage to ensure personnel safety.
  39. Continuously improve procedures, processes and methods to ensure quality with zero defects and excursions.
  40. Identify areas for improvement in process and product relating to safety, quality, delivery and cost and elevates them to the Lead, Manufacturing Engineer Supervisor or Production Supervisor.
  41. Assist on continuous improvement teams to help drive department improvements.
  42. Ensure 5S is maintained within the department to maintain and improve efficiency.
  43. Perform preventive maintenance tasks as assigned to ensure equipment integrity.


Requirements:

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.

Education and Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent education certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum twelve years of machine tool setup and operation experience in an ISO/AS/MIL STD prototype/job shop environment, utilizing complex documentation and verbal/written instruction.

Desired Job Qualification:

  • Completion of a two-year degree or certification in machining or equivalent from an accredited school, and/or vocational training.
  • Experience with Fusion software is a plus

Compensation and Benefits:

The hourly range for this role is $28-$35 per hour. This range represent the anticipated minimum and maximum base + bonus for this position based upon a good faith and reasonable estimate. The final compensation for this position will be set based on the applicant’s qualifications (education, training and/or experience related to this role), and therefore, may fall outside the range shown, depending on the circumstances.
