Job Description

Job Description

Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-160 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.

Come join a growing multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers designing the next generation nuclear power plant. Holtec International is seeking Nuclear Fuel Engineers to perform advanced technical and engineering problem solving in support of nuclear fuel and plant operations, as needed for development and licensing of the SMR-160 passive, natural circulation, integral light water reactor. This position requires a highly-motivated individual with the flexibility and willingness to work on a wide array of technical and regulatory topics. Engineer will be part of a team executing a U.S. Government cost-shared development program requiring efficient completion of engineering assignments.

Typical Responsibilities would include:

  • Provide in-depth technical expertise to develop, manage and implement nuclear fuels engineering analysis, activities and programs.
  • Develop and implement technical oversight and collaboration activities with fuel vendor to assure fuel and core component in-reactor design requirements are in accord with SMR-160 licensing activities
  • Design, modeling, and analyses of the nuclear core and fuel system that involve the use of engineering computer codes, empirical methods, and first principle methods
  • Calculations that support safe plant operation by confirming that fuel rods thermo-mechanical properties are in accord with SAFDLs and to provide initial (pre-transient) fuel rod conditions as input to downstream safety analyses (i.e., rod ejection accident).
  • Report preparation and licensing documentation
  • Participation in meetings with clients, collaborators, and with the United State Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this position:

  • BS in Nuclear Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, or closely related field) from an accredited college of university
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in the nuclear industry or similarly applicable (i.e., academia or national laboratory)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency required in Microsoft Office suite of PC applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint)
  • General knowledge of nuclear fuels and power plant operations/physics
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with nuclear fuel performance or structural analysis software to design and analyze nuclear fuels for a range of reactor conditions (e.g., BISON, FRAPCON/FRAPTRAN, TRANSURANUS, FALCON, PARFUME, or ANSYS)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency required in Microsoft Office suite of PC applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint)

The following attributes are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position:

  • MS in nuclear engineering with emphasis on fuel mechanics and reactor physics
  • 5+ years of experience in the nuclear industry, especially performing engineering calculations/evaluations
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in performing routine confirmatory calculations and supports reviews and evaluations of the safety and non-safety related reactor systems design, technical specifications, the reactor core, fuel and systems design, nuclear methods, or performance of operating reactor
  • Experience preparing licensing documents for submittal to NRC and comprehensive knowledge of NUREG-0800 (NRC Standard Review Plan for LWRs) Chapter 4 and 15 requirements
  • Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810
