SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Lead Parks Maintenance, the incumbent is responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of the City’s parks.


GENERAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to conduct various unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance functions involving the City’s parks, cemetery, and the equipment and facilities. The position operates under general supervision in executing the duties associated with maintaining those public properties.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This job/class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization as a whole, fully embracing the cultural and values statements espoused by the City.
  • Mows grass, prune trees and shrubs, monitors irrigation and performs other duties associated with maintaining the aesthetics of the parks and cemetery.
  • Prepares the baseball fields for events.
  • Ensures all playground equipment is safe and operable.
  • Cleans and maintains City splash pad.
  • Operates heavy equipment, if qualified, including backhoes, loaders, trenchers, and tractors.
  • Checks equipment that will be used each day to make sure everything is working and operational.
  • Assists in snow removal and sweeping duties of walkways maintained by the Parks Department.
  • Conducts per-operation maintenance checks on equipment, and may execute the duties required to maintain equipment within the department.
  • Responds to emergency calls 24 hours per day, and may perform related duties and/or organize and direct other performance depending on magnitude of requirements.
  • Supervises crew in the absence of superintendent and/or crew leader.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs other duties and special projects as requested by supervisor


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in parks and recreations, turf management or closely related field.


Requires one (1) year of experience in parks maintenance, landscaping or closely related experience.


Certificate or licenses:

  • Requires a valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Requires a Pesticide certificate or ability to obtain certificate within two years of hire date.
  • Requires CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within six months of hire date.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Handles or uses machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Duties are conducted predominately in an out-of-door environment which includes exposure to extreme heat and cold or wet/humid conditions.


Subject to loud noise and vibration, and maybe conditions including fumes, odors, dust, mists, and gases on a limited daily basis.


Encounters mechanical hazards on a daily basis. Occasionally, may be subjected to electrical hazardous and burns as well as working at heights above ground level while exposed to out-of-door conditions.


On a moderate basis may encounter hazards which could cause burns, and could involve toxic/caustic chemicals.



OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficient knowledge of parks maintenance equipment operation.
  • Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100 & 700.

The impact of errors is moderately serious – affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens or loss of life could occur but probability is low.


Communication Requirements

Reads routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writes routine sentences and completes routine job forms and incident reports; speaks routine sentences using proper grammar.

Responsible for guiding others, requiring frequent decisions, affecting the individual, co-workers and others who depend on the service; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures, but many variations from the routine.


Complexity of Work

Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
