Purpose: This position involves the use of CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine shop equipment. Primarily Vertical Turret Lathe with Fanuc 10 Control, Maho Machining Center, and Vertical Machining Center (Hurco).

Input Material

Material comes from many sources, mainly nodular iron castings, aluminum castings, some steel, and some miscellaneous.

Essential Functions

Set up and operate, with knowledge of desirable speeds and feeds for various alloys. Ability to safely and effectively fixture and set up a variety of castings of various sizes and shapes. Knowledge of standard G & M codes, ability to use various metrology equipment to verify work performed along with the ability to offset and edit if needed to attain a quality part the first time every time. Ability to program is desirable. Majority of work is done on castings in a high mix low volume environment.

  • Five axis experience and manual machining is a plus.
  • Set up and operate CNC 5 Axis Milling
  • Vertical and Horizontal Machining
  • CMM Programming experience is a plus

Proficiency Levels

Level 1: Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Has attained very high level of proficiency and requires virtually no supervision. Generally has a minimum of 6 years experience. Can perform any operation that the machine is capable of doing and is capable of programming the machine, where applicable. Can set up any sequence of operations using any combination of tools with no outside help. Is a competent tool sharpener. Is extremely proficient at math required by job - is expert at using measuring instruments such as micrometers and other gauges. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of machine including checking oil sight glasses. Performs periodic maintenance per the manufacturer's instructions. Can determine when it is necessary to have major maintenance performed to return the machine to normal operating condition.

Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work - has very low rejection rate. Uses experience with CNC machines to use proper tape or disk based on local records. Checks out program on first piece by positioning tool(s) for each operation, but not cutting until position is verified. Observes machine during entire automated machining operation - makes sure tools are sharp and performing correctly. Uses proven techniques to complete the required automated sequence of operations. Passes job on to next workstation in optimum time to maintain required quality and minimize rework. Represents Machine Shop on Continuous Improvement Task Teams. Assists Machining Supervisor in establishing Certification Test for each CNC machine. Assists new employees and other Technicians with understanding the automated operations necessary to obtain Certification. Works closely with Engineering to program machine for prototype work and makes meaningful suggestions for product improvement.

Problem Solving - Can work out virtually any problem that arises concerning work being performed - has usually seen some form of the problem before.

Blueprints & Traveler - Can not only correctly interpret the blueprints, but assists other Technicians and alerts Engineering to drawings that require correction. Can interpret all operations listed on Traveler documents that move with each job.

Level 2: Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Has attained moderate level of proficiency and requires occasional supervision. Generally has a minimum of 3 years experience. Can perform most operations that the machine is capable of doing and is capable of some programming of the machine, where applicable. Can set up most sequences of operations but may require help with new or very complex operations. Is a competent tool sharpener. Can do routine math required by job - is able to use all measuring instruments such as micrometers and other gauges. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of machine including checking oil sight glasses. Performs periodic maintenance per the manufacturer's instructions. Can determine when it is necessary to have major maintenance performed to return the machine to normal operating condition.

Level 3: Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Works at an acceptable level of proficiency and requires general supervision. Generally has less than 3 years of experience. Can perform some of the operations that the machine is capable of doing and is learning the others, including programming the machine, where applicable. Requires assistance setting up most sequences of operations and selecting the proper tools. Is learning how to sharpen tools. Can do routine math required by job - is learning how to use all measuring instruments such as micrometers and other gauges. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of machine including checking oil sight glasses. With supervision, performs periodic maintenance per the manufacturer's instructions. Calls the Machining Supervisor if it appears that maintenance to the machine is necessary.

Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work - has acceptable rejection rate. Requires help selecting proper tape or disk using local records. Needs supervision while checking out program on first piece. Observes machine during entire automated machining operation - requires supervision to make sure tools are sharp and performing correctly. Uses proven techniques to complete the required automated sequence of operations. Passes job on to next work station but in most instances must sacrifice time to maintain required quality and minimize rework. Participates on Continuous Improvement Task Teams.

Problem Solving - Can work out some of the problems that arise concerning work being performed. Utilizes the experience of the Level 1 and 2 Technicians and the Machining Supervisor.

Blueprints & Traveler - Can correctly interpret the blueprints some of the time, but frequently needs assistance when working on new, or very complex, jobs. Can interpret most of the operations listed on Traveler documents that move with each job.

Physical Requirements

Job requires standing most of the day. There is no repetitive motion. Since overhead cranes are available in all work areas, Technicians are not required to lift more than 50 pounds.

Environmental / Safety Issues

Normal exposure to coolant liquid, dust and fumes - limited exposure to hazardous materials. Keeps work area clean and free of scrap materials. Follows all safety rules applicable to machine as stated on posted signs and in Company policy.

Cross Training

Cross-trains on all of the machines listed in this position description as directed by the Machining Supervisor.

Training

Requirements for this position are to also be engaged in: 5S, Continuous Improvement, On-Time Delivery, Routine Total Preventative Maintenance and the submission of Improvement Ideas.

Education / Certification

High school graduate preferred - will consider commensurate experience. Has passed Certification Test established by the Company for each machine that is used without close supervision.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience in Mastercam on horizontal CNC milling machine as well as VTL.
Program and setup 5 axis machine.
Working knowledge of other forms of CAD software, Vericut and Soildworks.
Understand GD&T, read and interpret blue prints.
Ability to hold tight tolerances.
Strong verbal communication.
Assist in helping operators to maintain production and quality.

Finished Product

Ensures that finished product meets specifications and that it is moved to the next position on the Traveler in a timely manner.

Reports To

Reports to Machining Supervisor. Ensures that the Machining Supervisor is informed of all progress and problems.
