As the Chief Advancement Officer, you will plan and lead revenue, marketing, and partnership efforts. As a member of senior management, you contribute to developing the organization’s plans, strategies, and goals. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) oversees, provides leadership for, and is responsible for achieving success in fundraising, marketing, and communications initiatives and activities.

The CAO leads a multifaceted development and external affairs operation, including major individual gifts, foundation and government grants, corporate sponsorships and grants, events, annual giving, endowment and planned gifts, direct marketing, communications, marketing, and public relations.

Qualification and Skills:
  • College degree with 8-10 years of revenue-generating experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the grant-seeking process, including grant writing, submission, and reporting.
  • Proven track record in fundraising from diverse sources.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, energy, and enthusiasm with the ability to build long-term relationships and represent the organization to external audiences.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write and present fundraising materials to a diverse set of audiences.
Leadership Team Responsibilities:
  • Serve on the leadership team and collaborate in setting goals and objectives, progressing on performance, coaching, and evaluating, which are all ongoing.
  • Work as a member of the Leadership Team to determine Birmingham Green’s long-range vision.
  • Actively participate in creating, implementing, and progressing Birmingham Green’s multi-year and annual plans.
Advancement Responsibilities
  • Set the strategic vision for fundraising, donor stewardship, and growth.
  • Create and nurture long-term relationships with current and new funders.
  • Participate in top-level fundraising Birmingham Green activities, including planning, cultivation, and solicitations.
  • Ensure that the stewardship plan is followed so donors feel engaged and appreciated and that funders are well stewarded.
  • Oversee management of prospect lists and monitor and analyze forecast pipeline.
  • Oversee and maintain the database, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of information (capture and create Birmingham Green action items, all major interactions, personal information, and relationships).
  • Partner with Finance to enhance and maintain gift processing policies and procedures and ensure thorough and accurate record-keeping.
  • Oversee Birmingham Green branding and messaging.
  • Create and implement an omni-channel digital marketing strategy.
  • Develop a pipeline of speaking opportunities locally and nationally to raise Birmingham Green’s profile and its innovative approach.
  • Oversee the creation of all written fundraising materials, including grant proposals, reports, appeal letters, marketing materials, event invitations, etc.
  • Generate positive press coverage.
  • Ensure appropriate measures are taken within marketing and communications to protect client privacy and staff safety.
  • Community engagement event strategy and execution.
  • Oversee crisis communications and response.
  • Establish strong relationships with Board members and engage with them, as appropriate, to support the Advancement strategy.
  • Develop revenue reports for the Board and make presentations at Board meetings.
Essential Functions:
  • Supervises department personnel; assigns duties and evaluates staff performance.
  • Writes, reviews, and updates policies and procedures. Prepares and submits administrative reports.
  • Completes questionnaires and government agency reports and provides information as requested by the CEO.
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment and participates in fiscal planning.
  • Maintains strict ethical professional behavior and maintains confidentiality.
  • Exercises good judgment and tact at Birmingham Green when dealing with staff applicants and others.
  • Represents the facility and its policies to applicants and employees positively.
  • Maintains professional growth through attendance in in-services, seminars, and certifications.
