POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will spend approximately 50% of their time working with Community Programs and 50% of their time working with the East Valley Program Team. The Community Instructor will be responsible for providing a physically and emotionally safe environment for all in the Aftercare program that allows for them to have fun, enjoy new experiences and develop positive relationships with their peers. Additionally, they will assist the children with homework, reading assignments and provide support for educational programming as assigned as well as develop new engaging programs. The Community Programs Director will also provide instruction and guidance for a wide variety of both physical and hands-on activities along supporting community wide events such as the holiday dinner, pumpkin party and fall farm fun day. This position is responsible for the preparation and delivery of programs offered through the Teambuilding, and Retreats programs which include but are not limited to guided farm and garden tours, hikes, ecology lessons, teambuilding, adventure education, archery, boating crafts and facilitating high and low ropes elements in our East Valley.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide safe supervision to assigned children at all times.
  • Observe, monitor, and participate in children’s play activities.
  • Efficiently redirect inappropriate student behaviors and implement the program discipline system to effectively monitor and guide proper student behavior.
  • Help develop and follow daily schedules created with children’s input to meet the needs of the entire group.
  • Assist in the cleaning and straightening of the room/program space and equipment before, during, and after the program.
  • Provide a positive environment that is conducive to the development of children’s peer-to-peer relationships.
  • Facilitate, plan and implement programs with small groups of students and guests in a wide variety of programs.
  • Prepare, develop, and maintain program spaces and resources for use by staff and participants.
  • Serve as host for groups.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities.
  • Create and implement new programs that align with the goals and objectives of Frost Valley YMCA.
  • Serve as a substitute at the Frost Valley Day Care as needed.
  • This position requires weekend work.

RATE OF PAY:

Seasonal employment from April '24 to June '24 (seasonal gross pay range $6,080- $7,296), includes shared housing on site (with a private room) and meals included (when guests are on property).

If interested in extending employment past Spring seasonal capacity, ask the hiring manager about our Summer seasonal roles.

Medical/dental/life insurance will be offered if extending seasonal employment and after completion of 60 days service



Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor’s degree in Youth Development, Education, Outdoor Recreation or equivalent life experiences
  • Desire to work with children between 5-12 years of age in an active after-school setting to create a safe, fun and supportive environment.
  • Minimum two years’ experience working with youth in a camp or YMCA setting
  • Possess current First Aid/CPR certification (certifications can be earned upon hire at Frost Valley)
  • Excellent communication and organization skills, a strong and reliable leader
  • Successful working under pressure and safety-minded in decision-making
  • Available to work evenings and weekend
  • Possess a valid US Driver’s License and be able to pass internal FV driver training


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
  • Employee may be required to traverse on rough terrain
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
