SMUD's Power Generation Department is looking to hire a Heavy Duty Equipment Operator Foreman/woman to join our hydro operations team located at Fresh Pond (approx 50 miles east of Sacramento, 15 miles east of Placerville off Highway 50).

The intent of this job posting is to establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill current and future, permanent and limited-term, vacancies for up to two (2) years. You must clearly demonstrate, on your resume, that you possess the knowledge, skills and experience required in the minimum qualifications listed in this posting.

Purpose

Provides direction, guidance, and support to Heavy Duty Equipment Operators engaged in operating diesel or gasoline powered construction and road maintenance equipment on a large variety of jobs. Supervises and performs general operation and maintenance work during periods when equipment operation is not required.

Nature and Scope
This is the working supervisor level in the Heavy Duty Equipment Operator series and involves the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans, schedules and directs the work of Heavy Duty Equipment Operators and other crew members.
  • Operates a variety of diesel and gasoline powered equipment such as bulldozers, motor patrol graders, skip loaders, mobile cranes, snowplows, backhoes, and a variety of other mobile and stationary equipment used in road construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Ensures that the necessary tools and materials are available to perform work; responsible for the custody of materials and tools.
  • Services and makes field repairs and adjustments to gasoline and diesel powered equipment.
  • Reviews and maintains records of work in progress and work completed.
  • Maintains and completes records related to personnel, equipment, materials and inspections.
  • Interfaces with other work groups and vendors.
  • Supervises and performs general operation and maintenance work during periods when equipment operation is not required.
Required Experience Qualifications
Typically, five 5 years experience building/repairing roads, transporting heavy equipment, and installing underground services including approximately two 2 years supervisory/lead experience.
Knowledge Of
Basic supervisory principles and practices; road construction methods and materials; applicable safety laws, regulations and practices; use, operation, adjustments, servicing, and maintenance requirements of wheel and track laying type equipment and other mobile and stationary equipment.
Skills To
Plan, direct, prioritize and supervise the work of assigned personnel; train and instruct staff in the correct methods of equipment operation; develop work procedures; operate various types of equipment with skill and good work output; troubleshoot and repair/adjust equipment; communicate and interact effectively with staff, contractors, vendors, and others; work safely and direct and audit the safe working habits of subordinates; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of assigned work; and, [perform the necessary record keeping and maintenance of documentation.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Strong Leadership Skills: ability to lead a team following organizational structures and processes to ensure jobsite safety and efficiency
  • Strong Problem-Solving Skills: ability to identify, anticipate, and analyze potential problems and implement solutions
  • Strong Communication Skills: ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
  • Experience effectively leading a team to meet project deadlines while working under pressure and at a sustained pace
  • 2 years' supervisory experience in construction and snow removal
  • Experience operating heavy site and snow removal equipment such as rotary blower and snowplow
  • Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat Endorsement
Required Licenses/Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years. A Class A Drivers license may be required and in addition, the position may require a hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six 6 months of hire.
  • Candidates appointed to positions requiring the possession/retention of a Class A Drivers license must undergo an initial drug and alcohol screen and submit to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation DOT.
