Job Description:

The Construction Laborer assists with the construction, maintenance, and removal of underground construction as well as all custom work order jobs. The Construction Laborer reports to the Construction Superintendent, but will receive work order assignments from the Construction Foreman.

The Cable Locator installs, maintains, and services communications services/data circuits on fiber optic cable, protection devices, and customer-owned equipment. Splices and tests fiber optic cable. The cable locator is responsible for pinpointing the paths of wires, pipes, and other conduits that carry utilities underground. The cable locator protects underground utilities from damage during excavation projects—reports to the Installation and Repair Supervisor.

Job Duties:        

• Safely operate entry level construction tools and equipment associated with construction activities including trenchers, forklift, tampers, mud-vac, etc.
• Digging, backfilling, and all other entry level processes associated with underground construction activities
• Assists with the preparation, installation, and maintenance of cables, vaults, and pedestals, for copper and fiber cables according to safety regulations and engineering drawings and plans
• Installation of plant facilities
• Pulls wire associated with low voltage or electrical construction
• Repair or replace wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools
• Clean or prepare construction sites
• Manage daily logs to accurately track hours worked, material usage, and equipment usage

Job Duties:        

• Service installs, maintenance, and cable locating.
• Maintains and updates customer network information in electronic systems.
• Assists where necessary with contractors working near buried facilities.
• Checks daily locate requirements with department managers.
• May confer with customers to further determine problems and acceptable resolutions.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
• Ability to pay close attention to detail, work independently or as a team, and make sound technical decisions using the information at hand.
• Answers questions concerning utility locates from contractors and homeowners.
• Reports problems to department managers found while locating in service areas.
• Completes administrative paperwork or digital forms on a timely basis as directed.
• Displays a positive, professional appearance and work attitude.

Job Requirements:

• Must have a high School diploma or equivalent
• 1+ year of manual construction labor preferred
• Familiarity with ERP systems (Spectrum or other construction ERP’s preferred).
• Construction/telecommunications industry experience highly preferred.
• Knows and understands utility locate practices and procedures.
• Reads and interprets utility maps and as-built civil engineering drawings
• Knows and understands GIS and GPS
• Understands and communicates with CA 811 Locate Center
• Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently, assess priorities, manage various activities, and pay attention to detail under tight deadlines and heavy workloads.
• Willing to travel and work occasional overtime/ weekend hours
• Willing to work both private and prevailing wage projects
• Ability to work well with others
• Must comply with all company policies and safety procedures.
• Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications
• Demonstrate active listening skills
• Must have good time management and the ability to meet deadlines

• Valid California driver’s license and favorable DMV record.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Requirements:

• Must be available to work overtime, varied shifts and assume on-call duties as required.
