The Director of Transportation Operations role is responsible for all operational departments at Epic Mountain Express/Colorado Mountain Express (CME), including three Base Areas and two Airport Operation centers, along with the Resource Management and Health, Safety & Training departments. This role requires creating safety-first solutions for dynamic transportation logistics challenges shaped by our unique winter operating environment, a passion for delivering flawless guest service experiences, and the desire and ability to attract, develop, and retain leadership talent.  Epic Mountain Express/CME shared-ride shuttle and private car product lines transport up to 400,000 passengers per year over 7.5 million miles across a 250-mile geographical range within Colorado, that are serviced and supported by 300+ Guest Service Drivers and 75 airport and dispatch personnel. This position is based in Edwards, CO with frequent travel required to all operation centers.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the success of Epic Mountain Express line run routes and private car services, diligently making corrections and recommendations to ensure route efficiencies and resource allocations in support of budget goals.
  • Create opportunities and make recommendations for new and/or reimagined transportation services to our resort areas in support of our brand.
  • Demonstrates a safety-first perspective towards operational decision-making, prioritizing appropriately to ensure guest and employee safety remains our primary objective. Supports and encourages consistent and unique Health, Safety, & Training departmental initiatives.
  • Prioritize the recruiting, hiring, and retention of Epic Mountain Express’ Guest Service Driver teams, planning for and managing headcount numbers to align with budget and brand goals.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of Federal and State transportation regulations related to passenger-carrying vehicles and authorities, including all FMCSA regulations pertaining to Small Passenger Carrying Vehicles and any pertinent Colorado PUC regulations. Responsible for the filing of all reports required by these managing authorities.  
  • Display a passion for flawless guest service experiences for Epic Mountain Express guests. Utilize guest survey results and other feedback mechanisms to create guest service reports related to operations purviews, including Guest Service Drivers, Dispatch Centers, and Airport Counters.  
  • Disciplined approach to employee talent development, with a strong interest and passion to constantly identify, attract, and develop employee talent.  
  • Works with Revenue Management to ensure appropriate yield management strategies are implemented with consideration to seasonality, resource supply, and guest demand.
  • Works to create an engaged workforce, implementing employee engagement tools and tactics to foster a culture of engaged, ‘can-do’ employees.
  • Participate in airport transportation meetings and committees to maintain operational compliance while ensuring an out-front approach to our airport strategies.
  • Responsible for the annual driver and staff labor budgets totaling approximately $5m for six operations departments.  
  • Preparation and distribution of weekly, monthly, and annual reports, outlining and measuring the performance of the Operations department through use of metrics across multiple perspectives.
  • Display learning agility and demonstrate curiosity towards departmental interdependence, both internally and across the Vail Resorts enterprise.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 8 years of related and relevant experience
  • 8 years of experience in transportation or logistics delivery (highly preferred)
  • Minimum 8 years of personnel management experience
  • Strong computer skills in excel required. Knowledge of Peoplesoft, SuccessFactors and Hudson preferred. Learning agility required.
  • Fluent in all aspects of the English language (speaking, reading and writing)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to facilitate strategic dialogue and problem solving across multiple departments
  • Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness required
  • Must be able to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality
