Job Title: Charge Nurse withTechnical RoleDepartment: Dialysis Job Summary: The Charge Nurse/Technical Coordinator will be responsible for all clinical operation functions of the facility during the assigned shifts, as well as technical aspects of patient care and water treatment. Coordinates with the Bio-medical contractor/s machine and water treatment maintenance and performs facility audits as part of the QAPI process. Promotes and supports communication and teamwork of the staff.  Ensures compliance with Safety/Infection Control Policies and Procedures and department Policy and Procedures and report abnormalities to the Director of Dialysis.  Provides direct patient care when needed.  Maintains a clean, orderly and hazard-free work area.  Administers medications as ordered in accordance with the unit policy & procedures. Recommends and initiates disciplinary action in conjunction with the Director of Dialysis.  Acts as a resource person for staff member. Serves as the nurse supervisor in the absence of the Director of Dialysis.   Job Qualifications: Education: Graduate of an accredited School of professional nursing. B. Personal Job-Related Skills: Supervisory or management experience preferred.  Effective oral and written communication skills. Licensure, Registry or Certification:  Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.  BLS required. Prior work experience:  Minimum of two (2) years experience in nursing care of the patient on maintenance dialysis, including training in and experience with the dialysis process which must include minimum one (1) years as charge nurse experience in an ESRD facility. Technical Training:  Completion of hemodialysis training program or current certification as a dialysis nurse.  Advanced knowledge of dialysis nursing.   Physical and Mental Requirements:  Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking.  Must be able to make frequent position changes such as bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching.  Must be able to lift and carry 0-50 pounds at times; may be required to lift and carry greater than 50 pounds.  May also be required to push 0-600 pounds at times.   Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Operates all dialysis related and emergency equipment safely and efficiently, performs required testing and verification for initiation and shut down procedures, evaluates patient conditions and intervenes appropriately. Directs staff during emergency.Supervises and performs nursing procedures: administers medications and vaccination, and performs patient assessment. Supervises the safe preparation, dispensing, and proper labeling of dialysate concentrate solutions. Assesses dialysis patient care needs and develops and distributes patient care assignments appropriately. Follows infection control policy and serves as the infection control nurse as delegated by the director of dialysis.Performs audits regarding technical and clinical aspect of patient care. Coordinates, documents and follow-up on maintenance and repair of physical plant and all equipment in the facility. Prepares and administers medications and dialysate concentration solutions according to policy as prescribed by physicians. Knowledgeable of the actions, indications, contraindication, precautions, adverse reaction, dosage and route of administration before administering to patient.Maintains overall shift operation in a safe, efficient, and effective manner by assessing patient care needs and develops and distributes patient care assignments appropriately. Acts as a preceptor and resource to new staff: assists in the hiring, training, and development of staff. Assists in development of staff meetings. Reviews patient record documentation to ensure regulatory compliance. Helps to ensure compliance with all infection control policies and procedures.Assists in overseeing dialysis payroll, billing, and patient admissions, discharges, and transfers. Ensures that resources are utilized appropriately. Serves as the supervisor in the absence of the Director of Dialysis.Other responsibilities as delegated by the Director of Dialysis. Other Significant Requirements: Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.Provides direct patient care.Interacts with patients, family members, Medical Staff members, department managers, and other staff on a continuous basis.   Helps to ensure completion of staff evaluations in a timely manner.Reports to work on time, maintains professionalism at all times, and performs duties with minimal supervision.Utilizes aseptic procedures and maintains aseptic precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.Keeps current with new technology by attending educational offerings and literature reviews.Helps Dialysis unit stay compliant with accrediting agency recommendations.
