Tips for a Server interview

Order up! If you’re on the lookout for a new serving gig, or perhaps in line for an interview, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled some of the most common server interview questions with tips for answering them so that you can be taking orders in no time. Let’s get started. Alright, we’ve given you some food for thought when it comes to common interview questions, but what about the interview itself? Take note of these pre-interview tips.

1. Understand the scope of the job

Always understand two things: Who you’re working for, and what you’ll be tasked with doing. In other words, research the company ahead of time (or, in this case, the restaurant). Make a T-chart, with one side listing the job requirements and the other side listing your skills. Compare. How do your skills fit the job requirements?

2. Practice answering server interview questions

Practice in advance! Take the questions above and give them to a friend or family member. Conduct a  mock interview where they act as the employer. You know you’ve heard this a thousand times: practice makes perfect.

3. Dress professionally for the interview

Pull out those Sunday church clothes early and put ‘em on! Attire goes a long way in making a good first impression. Always dress appropriately so that there aren’t any questions about how you choose to present yourself (or how you might dress when coming to work).

4. Prepare questions of your own

Last but not least, prepare a couple of follow-up questions for when your employer is done asking questions of their own. Why? For one, you probably will have questions about what comes next, benefits, job requirements, etc. But ask a few thoughtful questions and you’ll show the employer that you’ve done your research and care about the position. For example, ask them about something you came across when looking at the restaurant’s history. Or turn the tables and ask them what they like most about working there.
