Server - Interview Questions

Keep in mind — no interview is the same, but there are a few ‘general’ questions that tend to be asked again and again. Like, what interested you in the job? How you answer is dependent on you, but we can tell ya how not to answer: “I just needed a job and thought I’d apply.” Channel your inner-serving enthusiast, however, you need to. What interested you about this specific restaurant? Have you been a server in the past? If you’re pursuing another long-term career path, why did you choose to serve as a temporary job? Be passionate in your response, even if this isn’t a career-defining job.

Serving usually isn’t a “first time doing this” job, so expect to talk about your past experiences serving. If you haven’t been a server before but have worked in a restaurant (maybe as a host or hostess?), detail what you learned in the position, as well as how you’ve gained the necessary skills to succeed in a serving role.

Very important restaurant-specific question. Here’s what it’s asking: How do you stay organized? Detail your method of choice. How do you keep your tickets in order? Do you have a strategy for checking on tables and making sure your customers’ needs have been met? Compile your answers to these questions into one money response.

You know as well as we do — you don’t work in the service industry and do not deal with angry customers. This question is all about conflict resolution and professionalism. Emphasize this in your response. Provide a specific example to elevate your answer. Check out our post on using the STAR method for assistance.

At any given point, you might find yourself communicating with customers, the host or hostess, a manager, the cooks…so yeah, communication is super important! Make sure to say this if asked this question. Something like: “Communication is what keeps a restaurant running smoothly, and as a server, I think of myself as being right in the middle of the action. It’s my job to communicate with everyone — from customers to other staff members — to provide an exceptional experience for customers and help my teammates do their jobs effectively.”

When you’re a server, you’re running double-time, all the time. You need to be comfortable being on your feet, and if an employer asks you about this, just make sure you assure them that you are.

This question is more about your critical thinking and strategy skills than anything else. How do you go about learning a menu? Do you have specific memorization techniques? Do you study/practice reciting the menu at home? Are you willing to learn the menu in a way that makes you able to give good recommendations to customers if asked? Consider including this in your response. Any chance you have to emphasize your motivation and ability to go above and beyond should be taken.

One response won’t cut it for this question. Frame your answer in a way that includes multiple characteristics of excellent customer service. An example: “Customer service is all about friendliness, accessibility, knowledge, and problem-solving. You want to maintain a high level of energy when interacting with customers, and also be there for them when they need you. It’s important to understand what customers want so that you can help them and, if a problem arises, be able to solve it.” For extra credit, describe a great customer service experience you had, and what made it great.

Chances are your employer isn’t expecting you to spend the rest of your life in their restaurant (but hey, if it turns out to be a great gig and you spend ample time there, good for you!). All this question wants to know is whether or not you’ll leave within a month. No employer wants that, so even if you don’t know what your future holds (it’s okay if you don’t), forgo any response that hints at an early departure.
