Didn't Get the Job? Here Are 10 Possible Reasons
So you're getting interviews, but you're still having a hard time landing a job. Frustrating, I know. You could be guilty of one of these common job interview mistakes and not even realize it. Don't let one of these slip-ups ruin your chance of finding your next job.
1) No interview prep
There is nothing worse than not properly preparing for your interview. Run through your mental job interview checklist. Also, make sure you bring a few copies of your resume, references, and a notebook for jotting down notes.
2) Dressing inappropriately
This is your first impression with the hiring manager so you want to make sure you dress professionally. Find some interview outfit inspiration and know what you should (and shouldn’t) wear to the interview.
3) Poor communication skills
This is much more than just how you answer questions. Be sure to shake hands, make eye contact, and engage with the person interviewing you.
4) Badmouthing
Talking trash about your former boss or coworkers is a huge red flag. It makes the hiring manager wonder what you would say about their company if they hired you.
5) Showing up late
Showing up late will almost guarantee that you won't get the job. Do a practice run a day or two before your interview to see how much time you need. It's definitely better to arrive early than to come sprinting into your interview 10 minutes late.
6) Unprepared answers
Before the interview, grab a friend or family member and have them ask you common interview questions. Doing a mock interviewbefore the real interview will allow you to perfect your answers and give you a confidence boost!
7) Not asking questions
When the hiring manager asks, "Do you have any questions for me?", they actually want you to ask them questions. This shows them that you are passionate about joining their team. Do a little research and come with two or three questions in mind.
8) Body language mistakes
Sweating, twirling your hair, and moving around in your chair are just a few non-verbal signs that you’re nervous about the interview. And believe me, the interviewer will definitely pick up on this. Take a deep breath & take your time. You’ve got this.
9) Asking for a ride home
Make sure you have a source of reliable transportation for your interview. Nothing is worse than asking the interviewer for a ride home after your interview. Talk about a long car ride. Plus, the employer will worry that you won’t have a ride to get to work.
10) Being rude
The interview is when you can show off your personality a.k.a how awesome you are. The employer won't want to anyone that's mean or grumpy. Treat everybody with kindness, whether it's customers you run into, soon-to-be coworkers, anybody.
Avoid committing any of these common mistakes in your job interview. These little things can make a big impact on whether or not you get hired. By steering clear of these top 10 interview mistakes, you'll be one step closer to landing the job.
