General Summary of Duties: Responsible for obtaining all necessary referrals and/or authorizations from the insurance company. Responsibilities also include pre-certifying all outpatient and inpatient surgeries.

Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all of the job duties)

  • Answers all calls for referral/authorization requests.
  • Daily pick up of referral requests from participating offices.
  • Verifies referral requests form has accurate and complete diagnosis and procedural coding.
  • Calls insurance companies or utilizes electronic equipment to obtain authorization/referral.
  • Documenting referral/authorization number in appropriate section of the scheduler system in Nextgen.
  • Schedules appointment for patient if the referral is for an outside physician.
  • Files copy of the completed referral form.
  • Adheres to patient confidentiality protocol.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Requirements:

Education: High school diploma or GED is required. Graduation from a recognized training facility for medical assistant is preferred.

Experience: Minimum one year experience in a hospital or clinical setting, preferably as a medical assistant or medical receptionist; or one year experience as an appointment screener. Computer experience is required.
