JOB POSITION #22: FIELD MAINTENANCE WORKER - PARKS OPS

NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 65

DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs

WORK LOCATION: 901 Fairgrounds Road

HIRING RANGE: $15.00 per hour

PAY SEASONAL: Seasonal

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under direction of a Parks Foreman or Parks Worker I, II, III, or IV, performs assigned tasks involved with the care and maintenance of public grounds and parks, including park facilities.

Performs turf maintenance functions. Operates related equipment such as riding mowers, hand mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, and sand pros.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle, such as pickup trucks and one-ton trucks, to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Applies fertilizer by lifting 50 pound bags individually of fertilizer into a hopper and pushing 50 pound hand spreaders individually.

Responsible for seeding and irrigation. Using a shovel, digs up irrigation lines from ground level to four feet in depth; replaces PVC pipe and sprinklers.

Performs construction and ball field duties such as shoveling and digging in very dusty conditions; lifts bricks and often performs work on hands and knees.

Performs litter control tasks including picking up barrels and loading them onto the truck.

Cleans and repairs park shelters, picnic tables, grills, sand areas, and playgrounds.

Cleans rest rooms and using cleaning supplies as directed.

Often performs work on hands and knees.

Operates noisy, self-propelled equipment.

Works around the public in a safe and courteous manner.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NONESSENTIAL DUTIES

Directs traffic around work site.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Extensive background checks required.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Experience in installation and repair of sprinkler systems preferred or the ability to learn.

Ability to operate noisy equipment for extended periods of time.

Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

Ability to tolerate weather extremes for extended periods of time. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.

Ability to learn to properly operate tools and equipment safely as listed below.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Pickup truck, lawn and landscaping equipment, mowers, airifier, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds individually and with assistance occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
