Role Description

Reporting to the SVP Portfolio Risk Management and located in Miami, the position of VP Portfolio Risk Management is a key member of the Portfolio Risk Management team. Our Portfolio Risk Management team manage portfolio risk management including credit, asset and market risk analysis and restructuring activities. The team will drive commercial decision making, including investment in aircraft assets and everchanging appropriate allocation of the portfolio based on our specialist understanding of our global customer base and the aviation industry. This ensures that SMBC AC has a balanced view of the risks which are an inherent aspect of the industry and ensures efficient approvals of customer transactions and resolution to any customer issues in an appropriate and timely manner.

The VP Portfolio Risk Management is responsible for monitoring and managing the portfolio risk in a dedicated global region which includes the monitoring of airlines and the aviation environment. Using the information gathered the VP Portfolio Risk Management will ensure the business is taking timely and effective action to ensure SMBC AC is taking a balanced risk approach.

Role Objectives
  • Working with senior team members to provide consistent and timely industry leading credit risk analysis and risk management across SMBC AC's business.
  • Support maintaining an in-depth and live-time knowledge of the global aviation industry and communicate this effectively on any credit risk issues that arise.
  • Contribute to consistent and coordinated implementation and management of SMBC AC's overall risk governance framework in conjunction with various credit and risk functions within SMBC AC's shareholders.
  • Ensure the timely identification of credit risk issues, maintain oversight of payment and other defaults across SMBC AC's portfolio and work across SMBC AC to manage these issues proactively.
  • Actively and confidently contribute to the day-to-day decision making and management across the business as part of various internal risk and portfolio management committees (including the Watch Meeting, Asset Value Committee).
  • Provide context and guidance in relation to the how specific transactions fit into SMBC AC's overall business plan and strategy.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Minimum of 4-5 years relevant experience in an aviation related sector, with proven experience in taking a macro view of the sector as well as a micro view of individual airlines.
  • Finance based primary degree is desirable but not essential.
  • Good knowledge of aviation sector and an ability to discuss the market dynamic and future shape of the airline industry.
  • Broad understanding of aviation finance and lease transaction structures (operating leasing, sale & leaseback, commercial debt) desirable.
  • Proven track record working in a fast paced, dynamic, service orientated environment.
  • Strong problem solving and financial skills including an ability to read, interpret and critically analyse financial accounts.
  • Previous experience as a proven negotiator and capable of leading negotiations.
  • IT literate with proven ability in developing systems and reporting tools to deliver operational excellence and implementing necessary change.
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate demands of different time zones
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel, occasionally on short notice
