Job Summary:

Provides support to patient care unit staff/patients. Performs general Registered Nurse (RN) functions. Collaborates with nursing staff, respiratory therapy, physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary team on patient care. Evaluates hospitalized patients for early signs of clinical deterioration on non-intensive adult acute care units in an effort to prevent respiratory/cardiac arrest, admission to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and to preserve the quality of life. Acts as role model for positively influencing the practice of nursing.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN): Preferred
  • Four years' acute care nursing experience-two of which must be critical care nursing: Preferred
  • Rapid Response/Code Team background: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Maintains current state-approved or compact state Registered Nurse (RN) license: Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS OR HS-ACLS OR RQIACLS) certification: Required
  • National Institute of Health (NIH) Stroke Scale certification: Required
  • National Certifications/Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)/Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCNRN)/Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN): Preferred within two years' of hire
  • Maintains all applicable specialty certifications: Required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS): Required
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) or AACN: Required

Essential Functions:

  • Promotes exceptional patient experience by fostering nurse-patient relationships. Provides care in an effective manner utilizing appropriate technical and decision-making skills. Maintains responsibility for assessing patient needs/conditions and provides appropriate resources, as needed. Detects obvious changes in patient conditions and provides care appropriately. Responds emergently to assist non-intensive adult acute care units in the short-term management of patients.
  • Responds and actively participates in all Rapid Response, i.e., CODE BLUE, CODE SEPSIS, Stroke, STEMI and CODE POLAR. Practices nursing in crisis and non-crisis situations across all adult inpatient areas. Delegates, supervises and evaluates abilities and performance of other team members. Reflects application of knowledge/skills pertaining to all diagnoses and procedures, medications and complications associated with specific patient populations.
  • Evaluates patient progress in a systematic, ongoing manner. Utilizes assessment data to revise diagnoses, outcomes and plan of care. Implements a safe plan of care for patients of varying complexity. Participates in and leads practice changes and process improvement initiatives within the Code Blue committee. Collaborates with management to improve the quality and outcome of Rapid Responses/Codes. Follows policy, procedure, standards of care and protocol changes common to patient population.
  • Participates with management and fellow associates in defining, implementing and evaluating unit goals. Partners with other departments to educate staff in rapid response/code management and improve the overall success of Rapid Responses/Code scenarios.
  • Participates in cost effectiveness initiatives, seeks opportunities to eliminate inappropriate and wasteful use of resources, makes recommendations and assists in development of plans to meet monthly operational budget.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
