The Tool and Die Maker works with computer controlled machinery and mechanical equipment to cut, shape and finish tools made of metal used to produce products. The position also produces prototypes. The Tool Room is a department of Engineering which is ultimately responsible for ensuring Production has useful, reliable and functioning tooling to maximize Resource Utilization. The Tool Room makes, improves and maintains tooling. The Tool Maker directs the Die Setter on tooling matters. The Tool Maker works with Engineering to make prototypes and provides technical guidance on fabrication issues.
Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Set up and operate MANUAL Lathes, MANUAL Mills, and Surface Grinders
  • Operate CNC Mills, Lathes and EDM Machines
Interpret models, blueprints, sketches or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies or assemblies.
Inspect dies and components using standard tool room measuring tools (Height gage, micrometers, calipers, etc.) before, during and after component machining.
Operate manual mill, surface grinder and other manual tool room equipment.
Perform hand operations needed to produce tools and molds using hand tools of the trade.
Assist in the installation, commissioning and startup of existing and new tool room equipment.
Perform basic tool room equipment troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.
Work with production personnel on continuous improvement projects.
Provide input into design of fixtures and tools for continuous improvement.
Supports Stamping operation by maintaining and repairing dies; machining parts.
Machines parts by measuring, marking, and scribing stock; setting up and operating lathe, mill, radial drill, shaper, grinder, etc.
Confirms parts by comparing measurements to specifications.
Assembles die by shaping, smoothing, and fitting parts with grinders, files, stones, etc.
Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
Minimum 4 years experience in a similar environment.
Candidates with Solidworks, CAM or Mastercam are preferred.
Experience working in an ISO 9001:2015 environment a plus.
