DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides services to children and their families to help them attain a more satisfactory social, economic, emotional and physical adjustment. You must have good knowledge of modern social services practices, casework philosophy and investigation methods and practices. You will work with children and adults under trying circumstances and must have a desire to work successfully with people. Make independent decisions, ability to plan and organize work, and understand and interpret laws and regulations.

Duties performed include the following:

• Obtaining information necessary for the identification of social, economic, emotional, health or physical problems and assessing risk.
• Determining eligibility for a wide variety of services on the basis of established regulations, policies and procedures.
• Providing casework and counseling services.
• Investigating child abuse complaints and providing protective and supportive services.
• Working in close cooperation with other agencies in planning needs of child.
• Working on computers to prepare social studies and case histories, letters, reports and client records.
• Maintaining contact and visiting children placed in settings outside the county.
• Participating in staff training and development.
• Transporting children and families.
• Participating in on-call responsibilities.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment.
• Work hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Hours may vary due to travel and after-hours appointments, etc.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Two years of experience as a County Social Services Aide 3 and two years of college level course work which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences; or
• A bachelor's degree which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences and one year of experience as a County Social Services Aide 3 or in a similar position performing paraprofessional case management functions.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within two months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Other Requirements:

• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

• You must pass a background investigation.
• A conditional offer of employment will require drug screening.
• This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
  • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
