Job Summary:

CNPC USA is actively seeking creative, innovative, best-in-class experts to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Sr. Polymer Scientist. The Polymer Scientist will conduct research and development of new materials and manufacturing processes, chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist in analyses, quality control, maintenance of environmental standards, and other work involving practical application of chemistry and related sciences.

This position reports directly to the R&D Manager of Materials and Fundamentals.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and development of polymer materials and manufacturing processes, especially elastomeric materials, through rigorous scientific approaches.
  • Non-metallic materials testing and characterization.
  • Technical leadership and support on seals selection and qualification for well completion, drilling, measurement tools.
  • Introduce and develop new static and dynamic seals for HPHT conditions.
  • Develop and support seal products for sour environment.
  • Materials support for root cause analysis.
  • Lead the qualification test for elastomer/composites/thermoplastic/coating materials.
  • Manage the project progress to meet project milestone schedule with good quality under the budget.
  • Write testing reports and project reports in time.
  • Create and maintain materials specifications.
  • Conduct all business activities in agreement with CNPC USA core values.
  • Performs other tasks and/or duties as assigned.

Key Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge and hand-on experience on formulation of polymer compounds, polymerization, and manufacturing processes, especially elastomeric materials.
  • It is a plus to have development and industrial manufacturing experience for Fluoroelastomers and polyurethane elastomers, etc.
  • Extensive knowledge on polymer structure-properties-processing relationship.
  • Extensive and hands-on experience on polymer characterization methods, such as mechanical properties testing, FT-IR, DMA, DSC, TGA, GPC, SEM/EDS, LC/GC-MS, Pyrolysis Chromatography.
  • Proven ability to deliver results on time, on target with quality and sustainability.
  • Familiar with industrial standards and specifications, such as ASTM, API, ISO, and NACE standards
  • Familiar with polymers (NBR, HNBR, Polyurethane, FKM, FEPM, FFKM, PEEK, composite, etc.) in the Oil and Gas industry.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry, PhD preferred with three to seven years of oil industry experience.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States of America.

Work Environment

This job operates in a research lab. This role routinely uses standard lab equipment such as mixers, ovens, press, molds, breakers, test tubes, flasks, thermometers, and computers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions.

The employee is regularly exposed to hazardous chemicals and airborne particles. While performing duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; reach and pull with hands and arms, and lift up to 50 lbs. The vision requirements include: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. This job also requires the ability to read and understand ideas in writing as well as oral and written communication.

Travel:

Some international and domestic travel is expected. Local travel between other CNPC USA locations and testing facilities is required.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position directs employees within the Materials group team and is responsible for assisting in the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.
