Job Description

Kha'p'o Community School (KCS) is looking for an Elementary Teacher dedicated to providing excellent and culturally relevant educational opportunities for Tewa children. Key duties include lesson planning, communicating with parents, collaborating with Tewa Teachers to fulfill KCS' mission, and participating fully as a member of the instructional team. Candidates for this position are highly organized, committed to holistic approaches to education, and embody Pueblo core values of Respect, Compassion, Responsibility, Perseverance, Community, and Partnerships.

KCS is a dual language (Tewa/English) Tribally Controlled Grant school serving Santa Clara Pueblo. We currently serve approximately 125 families, prenatal through 6th grade, and adult learners. KCS is a school grounded in providing students with rigorous, high-quality educational opportunities that are culturally centered on Tewa language proficiency and interactive, hands-on learning. We support students in their physical and emotional growth as well, valuing student identity and promoting and modeling high self-esteem and confidence.

Elementary Teachers at KCS collaborate with the Director of Instruction, the Assistant Director of Instruction, and teachers, to provide non-traditional instructional methodologies as well as experiential, project based, and culturally responsive opportunities that connect students to the Santa Clara Pueblo community and to tribal programs. Successful applicants for this position must be ready to participate in school events and model positive behavior to reinforce students' Tewa identity while implementing a supportive classroom management system which embodies cultural values and adapting to new teaching techniques. Elementary Teachers at KCS work closely with Tewa Teachers to provide a robust dual-language experience for students.

Applicants for this position must have a bachelor's degree and a NM Elementary Teacher license. Those possessing a master's degree or higher are preferred. Applicants with experience in Native American communities are preferred. Knowledge of Pueblo customs and the Tewa language are not required but preferred. KCS follows the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472) which promotes filling vacancies with qualified Indian candidates - consideration of non-Indian applicants will be made in the absence of qualified Indian candidates. Applicants will be required to pass a comprehensive background check and be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to work at KCS.
