SUMMARY: The Core Winding Technician & Supervisor Trainee will be primarily responsible for setting and operating the spiral tube winder line that winds and seals layers of paper around a mandrel with glue to make paper logs and then cuts to length to create cores. Daily work includes set-up/shut-down, adjusting mandrels, angle of ply's, maintenance of glue pot(s) and saw (knife blade). This includes set-ups, troubleshooting and producing the paper tubes in adherence to set quality standards, as well as participating in the development of creative new patented and proprietary products that use paper tubes. This position reports directly to the Core Winding Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adherence to PPT's Values, Principles and policies in the PPT Team Member Handbook.
  • Tends winding machine between various stages of processing, working as member of crew.
  • Removes spindle from dolly positions spindle in winding machine, using power hoist.
  • Pulls end of sheet through winder secures sheet to empty spindle, using tape.
  • Starts machine and regulates speed of winder to maintain even winding.
  • Measures, spaces, and sets blades and cutters according to product specifications.
  • Adjusts tension rolls on machine sets yardage counter using hand tools.
  • Stops machine when splices reach winder, indicating end of roll.
  • Tears or cuts spliced section, tapes end of sheet to prevent unwinding, and removes full spindle from machines.
  • Calculates dimensions or tolerances using instruments such as calipers.
  • Stops machine when necessary to cut out designated defective sections.
  • Disposes of scrap or waste material in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Inspects workstations to ensure safety and optimization of tools and processes.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work areas.
  • Follows all company policies and procedures.
  • Exhibits regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Technician in this position will have an opportunity to learn about all roles and functions that support the facility, including but not limited to equipment maintenance and repair, raw material processing, quality control, inventory management, tow motor operating, machine programming/operation, research and development, and back office support. The Technician will be mentored, coached, and work with other managers and support staff. They will be encouraged to utilize critical thinking and decision making to support their success and the company's production goals that meet customer requirements.


The individual in this role must have the ability to work alone and participate in a team environment, work and eventually supervise offset shifts, and as short-term customer needs require, work up to six days a week. Further, the individual in this role must be flexible and willing to work shifts of 10-12 hours, as production may require longer shifts. The role may involve additional responsibilities and opportunities as they become necessary and/or are assigned by PPT's leadership.

  • Must be able to lift, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds consistently, with heavier weight necessary at times.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop and twist frequently for extended periods of time.

  • Manual and finger dexterity and hand-arm steadiness is required, as well as the ability to use both hands for packing.
  • Visual acuity to read instructions, operate machines and inspect parts produced.

  • Works within a fast-paced manufacturing environment that is not temperature regulated.
  • Personal protective equipment is required as defined with in the hazard analysis sheet defined for this position.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or any level of College Degree preferred.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced work environment & lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Innovative problem-solving skills (additional training to be given).
  • Strong communication and leadership skills (additional training to be given).
  • Enthusiasm and punctuality.
  • The aptitude and desire necessary to be a good student of Progress Paper Tubes processes, equipment, and procedures (so long as there is a mechanical aptitude, all else can be learned).
  • Commitment to residing reasonably close to Wayne County, Indiana.
