Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Ultrasound Technologist will perform diagnostic ultrasound exams and interventional procedures on appropriate anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the individual site radiologist. Additional responsibilities include providing procedure-related patient care and education, maintaining records and documentation of procedures, and ensuring the safety and comfort of all patients, operators, staff and visitors. This position will require someone who can work effectively independently, as well as part of a team.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging on appropriate anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the individual site radiologist, while using independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Assist radiologist in performing interventional procedures such as biopsies, aspirations and drainage procedures.
  • Prepare preliminary reports and contact referring physician when needed.
  • Complete and sign patient screening forms and appropriately explain procedures to the patient.
  • Obtain necessary consent from patients before conducting procedures.
  • Maintain patient care, comfort and safety during exams.
  • Ensure images and documentation are put into PACS in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with front desk staff any changes that may alter patient schedule flow.
  • Provide optimal customer service and patient care, while utilizing AIDET service principles in all encounters.
  • Perform equipment quality checks and troubleshoot problems; call for service and notify appropriate management when necessary.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment and work area in accordance with required decontamination procedures.
  • Assist with daily operations of the ultrasound department.
  • Inventory supplies and assist with ordering in a timely manner.
  • Participate and maintain ACR accreditation requirements for the ultrasound department.
  • Attend and actively participate in all department, team and/or committee meetings.
  • Comply with all company, department and location specific policies, procedures and mandatory learning requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by radiologist and management.

Requirements:

Required Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program required, CAAHEP accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Current ARDMS with certification in: AB, OB required. Current ARDMS with certification in BR and VT preferred; certification in BR, or other pertinent areas may be required within 2 years of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS required.
  • Minimum 2-year clinical ultrasound experience preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of current ultrasound scanning procedures and protocols.
  • Proficient in: PACS; Microsoft Office Suite applications; Accessing and navigating company intranet for forms, policies and procedures; Accessing and entering data on organization-wide software; And accessing and using internet resources when required in order to perform job duties.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate findings to reading radiologist and interact in a positive and professional manner with patients and their family members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, co-workers, patients and their families.
  • Ability to maintain patience and tact when interacting with hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, visitors, etc.
  • Ability to coordinate work schedule with requirements of position (may include overtime). Physical Demands and Work

Ability to perform physical activity, including but not limited to: repetitive motions, feeling, grasping, fingering (pinching, typing, handling, etc.), lifting, pulling, pushing, walking, standing, reaching, crouching and stooping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs. over the head; and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance. Occasionally required to help lift and/or move patients. Physical ability to perform all aspects of diagnostic testing, including CPR on all patients. Cognitive skill required to administer safe patient care. Read/write/speak and understand English. Auditory and visual ability to assess and provide diagnostic care. Most work is accomplished indoors and in air conditioned or well-ventilated facilities.
