Continental Tide Defense Systems, Inc. is actively seeking a motivated, energetic, and detail-oriented individual for our ISO 9001 Management Representative position to be located at our Wyomissing, PA office. The successful candidates will join our Quality Assurance and Management Team currently supporting initiatives for Naval Sea Systems Command at the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station. Candidates must possess a high school diploma, GED or industrial school certificate. Target experience (5-10 years) includes: internal and external quality management system audits, maintenance, and compliance with ISO 9001:2015, assessing training on company policies and procedures and generating and presenting reports and audit findings.

Shipfitter
  • Shipfitter - The Shipfitter must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to assemble, modify, lay out, fabricate, repair and install plates, shapes and/or pipe to be used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship alteration and repair. The following is a list of typical work that a Shipfitter might be asked to perform:
  • Lays out work from written and verbal instructions. Employs appropriate trade methods to ensure watertight integrity on hulls of metal ships.
  • Manufactures and installs interior and exterior structural items.
  • Repairs and/or removes and replaces damaged ship structures and fittings. Understands and utilizes appropriate trade methods to create structural welds and fittings. Manufactures and installs parts and assemblies from templates.
  • Prepares surfaces for welding, burning, riveting and lays out for holes to be drilled utilizing miscellaneous hand, electric, and pneumatic tools. Measures with various precision instruments as required.

Coordinates and arranges for the work of several trades in connection with performing work from information received from technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, written and/or oral instructions.

Experience and Skills
  • Burning

o Knowledgeable regarding cutting plate jobs
o Knowledgeable regarding burning
o Knowledgeable regarding using hook up torch/light torch

  • Make up Plating

o Align and fit plates
o Ensure strong backing for the plate
o Draw sketches
o Ensure the edges and surfaces were prepared properly
o Use wedge and dog to secure the alignment
o Knowledgeable regarding the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel

  • Blueprint

o Read, understand, and interpret advanced blueprints to preform task required

  • Sketching

o Review sketches or drawings and be able to perform layouts.

  • Lay Out Access Cuts and Inserts

o Read and interpret sketches to complete a layout
o Perform layout (inserts/TAOs and rip-outs)
o Create temporary access cuts to take something out of a ship or facilitate another trade to get into another compartment or a tank
o Assess finished access cutting and beveling to ensure that the layout is being executed properly

  • Tank Inspecting

o Inspect a tank and document its current status
o Write a CFR to document inspections
  • Assist with Testing (Tank/Rutter/Bilge Keel/Air Test Kegs/Air Test High Hats)

o Knowledgeable regarding tank testing
o Knowledgeable regarding the ISO procedures and policy on testing based on the ship type
o Blank the tank and install the blanks in accordance with the ISO procedure
o Identify test location
o Set up a test rig

  • Foundation and Structural Alignment

o Install a prefabricated foundation
o Accurately pinpoint the installation location by reading sketches and drawings
o Level foundation based on requirements
o Know framing square and leveling tools
o Set the foundation either perpendicular or parallel to the baseline
o Align structures with critical dimensions
o Perform critical alignment on foundations

  • Portable Plasma Arc

o Understand the process of cutting ferrous and nonferrous metals
o Rip out and installation
o Knowledgeable regarding the plasma arc machine and its uses through on the job training/reading manuals

  • Mechanized Cutting Machine

o Know difference between plasma and gas operated machines

  • Other

o Possess fabrication skills
o Set up and perform ship fitting tasks
o Knowledgeable regarding mold loft offsets and how to use

Required Skills and Education
Education Minimum: High school Diploma/GED
Minimum Relevant Experience: 5 to 8 yrs.

Practical Theory Requirements

A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships.

Other Requirements
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
  • Must be able to wear standard PPE and use basic ship fitting tool list

Preferred Skills and Education
Education Preferred: High School Diploma/GED
Minimum Relevant Experience: 8 to 12 yrs.

Licenses/Certifications Preferred But Not Required:
  • Weld Certification
  • Ultrasonic Impact Testing Treatment (UIT Treatment) - certification
  • Carbon steel certification
  • Passing grade on breaking test
  • Certification in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as manual metal arc welding (MMA or MMAW), flux shielded arc welding or informally as stick welding (manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld)
  • Certification in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW or FCA) (a semi-automatic or automatic arc welding process)

.* Tack Welding via the welding school
o Preferred tack welding certification
o Preferred SMAW and FCAW or FCA certifications
