Professional Math Tutor

Shiprock Learning Center

Shiprock Campus


Duty Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, occasional after hours and travel

Summary/Objective of Position:

The role of the Professional Math Tutor is to facilitate student learning by helping to clarify course content that requires mathematics and by modeling the use of appropriate study strategies to ensure student success. Professional Math Tutor will communicate with STEM faculty to gauge the level of instruction of each course in order to assist students learning. The Math Tutor will assist students either in-person or on-line in basic mathematics, Intermediate Algebra, and college-level mathematics or any courses that require mathematics. The Math Tutor will also develop and facilitate structured mathematics sessions/workshops either in-person or on-line for students.

TUTORING
Facilitate and guide discussion with students on a one-on-one or group setting on mathematics assignments without doing the work for the student.
Assist students by appointment, particularly if referred by Instructor.
Apply easy to follow instructions to help students understand mathematics course content.
Assist with on-line courses, Zoom, Blackboard and or ITV courses.
Collaborate with Learning Center staff and faculty to improve tutoring skills.
Create tutoring schedule based on student needs and adhere to that schedule.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the tutoring session.
Develop and facilitate math workshops for students
Establish and maintain communication with STEM faculty to become familiar with instruction and resources available to students.
Provide feedback and/or progress reports to faculty or staff who submit student referrals for tutoring.

REPORTING
Enter information on tutor platform of students who were tutored.
Complete Time and Effort Reports and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.
Complete Tutor Logs and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.
Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions and submit to supervisor at the end of each week.
Sign in/out on time-sheet for documentation of hours worked.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BUT NOT LIMITED TO
Assist in general operation of the Learning Center.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

Two years experience in teaching or tutoring math and/or STEM subjects. Must have experience with on-line application, i.e. Zoom in order to provide tutoring sessions on-line.
Associate of Arts degree in a STEM discipline.

Preferred:

Bachelor degree in STEM discipline or related technology degree with demonstrated success in mathematics courses. Must have experience teaching and tutoring via in-person or on-line i.e. Zoom application.


Knowledge:

Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from various education, cultural, and social backgrounds.
Knowledge of media applications, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.
Adhere to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which ensures students' identification and records are protected.

Skills:

Must be proficient in Microsoft applications; Excel, and Zoom.
Able to learn other software that may be applicable.
Responsible, reliable, and punctual to deliver quality tutorial services with a positive attitude.

Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to make sound judgement.
Ability to maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

May be required to work flexible hours.
Must be able to lift, pull/push and carry up to 10 pounds.
Must be able to travel to other campus sites.

Other Requirement(s):

Must have and maintain a valid state issued driver's license and successfully pass a background check.
Tutoring certification my be required, depending upon area of assignment.
