As a Development & Research Engineering Specialist, you will manage multiple or complex engineering projects involving multiple functions, organizations, products, or value chains. This position will be part of the Advanced Materials Technology (AMT) Development Team located at Caterpillar's US Technical Center in Mossville, IL. The role is primarily focused on ferrous metallurgy and will explore new alloys, heat treatments, and manufacturing processes that will ultimately transfer into Caterpillar's next-generation products and facilities.

What you will do:
  • Ownership of Caterpillar's steel technology development portfolio, including identification of emerging technologies to meet technical and business challenges.
  • Leadership of development projects for wrought steel components and related heat treatment processes. This includes coordination of cross-functional teams for the development, application, and validation of new alloys/processes that meet performance and cost targets.
  • Establish project success criteria with internal clients, identify required team members, manage project plans and budgets, communicate to stakeholders, and meet committed project deliverables.
  • Consult on wrought steel specifications and coordinate assignments to create/update internal steel specifications and standards for the enterprise; including characterization and requirements for steel plate to be used in electrification application.
  • Direct collaboration with external labs/universities on research and test support.
  • Lead steel mill assessments in North America.

What Skills you will have:

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of steelmaking and general heat treating processes, New Technology Introduction (NTI) approaches, industry material standards; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

Product Testing: Knowledge of material and product validation testing approaches, metallurgical laboratory techniques, and tools; ability to design, plan, and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product performance and quality at all stages of development.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools, and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect, and resolve technical problems in a research lab or manufacturing environment.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

Education Requirement: B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering.

Top Candidates will also have:

Experience in product or technology development.

Advanced engineering degree.

Experience with simulation/analysis tools for alloy design.

The primary location for this position is Mossville, IL.
