Transmission Operations Engineering Intern

Department Overview

Electric System Operations oversees the operations of the PG&E's transmission and distribution system to ensure the Grid is operated in a safe, reliable, compliant, and event-free operation manner. We promote efficient work practices through communicating, collaborating, and coordinating with other departments and interconnected entities to meet safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction goals.

Position Summary

Transmission Operations Engineering provides engineering and technical support to the groups that monitor and operate the PG&E the transmission power system in real-time 24/7/365. Operations Engineers use applications including computer models of the entire PG&E transmission system and/or interconnecting systems to run power system studies. Team members conduct research and analysis of operating problems to evaluate power system operations and make recommendations to the dispatchers and grid operators.

Transmission Operations Engineering is looking for a talented summer intern to help support compliant, efficient, and safe system evaluations while bringing their new perspectives to our challenges.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $23.85 to $35.11

Responsibilities

  • Investigates/analyzes technical issues, with supervision of method, progress, and resources.
  • Assists other engineers, project teams, and supervision by developing, compiling, and providing technical data including EMS, SCADA and power system models.
  • Applies basic engineering principles and scientific theory.

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities within the Analytics and Assessments team. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric System Operations organization through the work they will be performing.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering at an accredited university.
  • Students must be continuing their education towards degree during and/or after the internship in a fulltime capacity.

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification.
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA.
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of power systems, power flow analysis, power system theory, power system stability.
