Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a motivated and leadership-oriented individual to join the Power/Control Systems (PCS) team as a Test Engineering Technician in Sykesville, Maryland.

In the Mission Systems sector, you'll join our experts in developing systems and solutions that keep our world safe. The PCS team is a leader in providing Power/Control Systems for naval based customers. The selected candidate will serve as a production test focal point between maintenance, design engineering, test operations, and manufacturing. This individual must be able to work to determine and develop approaches to solutions; must be able to work both within a team environment and independently; must be self-motivated, thorough, and detailed; and must be willing to learn and grown in additional engineering discipline areas.

Designs, develops, and implements testing methods and equipment. Plans and arranges the labor, schedules, and equipment required for testing and evaluating standard and special devices. Provides test area with parameters for sample testing and specifies tests to be performed. Compiles data and defines changes required in testing equipment, testing procedures, manufacturing processes, or new testing requirements. Responsible for testing all customer samples and for special tests that cannot be performed in the test area.

The Test Engineering Technician:
  • Sets up, runs and troubleshoots (down to the component level) test sets for a wide variety of programs.
  • Supports technicians through troubleshooting Hardware and Test Sets.
  • Mentors and trains new technicians and experienced technicians on newer test sets.
  • Gathers and analyzes test data to identify early trends.
  • Supports program meetings in developing root cause and corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with Test Engineering to develop and implement hardware and test system improvements and solutions.
  • Assists engineering in creating designs and/or developing circuits, processes and operations that assure proper function of product and test equipment per design specifications by working from general block diagrams, rough outlines of basic circuits, oral instructions, schematics, etc; makes necessary calculations to obtain or compare data as required.
  • Develops, constructs and supports test of highly complex components, assemblies, devices, circuits and systems; develops and constructs experimental and prototype devices, models and systems working from very general information; performs repairs and calibrations as necessary.
  • Performs initial procedural tests on new and/or changed equipment; makes modifications/calibrations as required to achieve desired results.
  • Assists Test Engineering with the development of processes, test procedures, and revision notices.
  • Performs integration testing of software and hardware.
  • Adheres to established procedures and practices as required to ensure compliance.


The ideal candidate will have the ability to effectively communicate and work with a variety of internal personnel from Test, Manufacturing, Quality, and Design engineering. He/she should also be self-directed, organized, and team oriented.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or recognized equivalent (GED) and an additional 5 years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Experience using MS Office tools.
  • Experience as an electronics technician or equivalent.
  • 2 years System Level troubleshooting experience.
  • Test Procedure development experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance; US citizenship is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Power Control Systems and Hardware.
  • Experience working on Naval systems.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems. Example: SAP.
  • Experience with configuration control.
  • Experience training and/or mentoring other personnel.
  • Component level troubleshooting experience.
  • Test Tool development experience.
  • Experience with LabView software.


Salary Range: $51,139.62 - $124,439.75

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
