This Machinist position sets-up and operates a variety of machine tools to fit and/or assemble parts to machine given jobs. Operates conventional and/or computerized numerical control machines to perform grinding operations, and make straightforward, repetitive adjustments to components. This position is also responsible to set-up and operate assorted conventional/computerized shop machining equipment to produce, grind, mill, plane, shape, groove, cut, or profile various types of wheels/parts to specifications.
• Knowledge of various raw materials and products, (i.e., metals, resin, aluminum, steels, alloys, and other composite materials/systems) along with machining characteristics and parameters to select proper cutting tools and correct machine feeds and speeds to perform high production and repetitive job duties.
• Select metal stock and lays out design according to dimensions from blueprints, work orders and clear or rough drawings.
• Knowledge of products and material characteristics to identify effective set-up and machining operations.
• Works from blueprints, sketches, work orders, models of parts to be made, or other specifications to determine the machine tool best for each operation to be performed, which attachments are to be used on each machine and operational sequences.
• Assembles new job setups based on the wheel/part size/fixture on a variety of different types of equipment (e.g., automatic grinding/milling machines, lathes, surface grinders) involving accurate alignment in order to maintain specified tolerances.
• Operate multiple machines by using appropriate tooling components, (i.e., optical tool setter, chucks, gauge blocks, micrometers).
• Calculates dimensions and tolerances using many types of precision instruments and equipment, (i.e., vernier, calipers, height gauges, protractors, micrometers, comparators, probes, and plug gauges) to attain accurate dimensions and tight tolerances.
• Lifts and positions parts manually or with hoists and secures them on faceplates, chucks, etc. using clamps and hand tools.

Requirements:
  • HS diploma or GED and a minimum of 2 years machining experience and/or training preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic trade mathematics, computer skills, and ability to read blueprints and understanding of machinist handbook.
  • Technical school training, apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience operating CNC machines and other metal fabricating machines may be required.
Physical Demands/Efforts
  • Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Frequently required to stand for extended periods, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with arms and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell.
Mental & Visual Demands
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
