Control Room Technician Job Description

Night Shift- 6:00 PM - 6:00AM 12-hour rotating shift.

We are looking for a Control Room Navigation Safety Technician to be responsible for monitoring and maintaining surveillance activities at MPC’s Straits of Mackinac Marine Navigation Safety Center. You, as part of a team of technicians, will be tasked with operating the surveillance equipment, which will be operating 24/7/365, monitoring marine traffic activities. You will be responsible for performing program functions in accordance with the Program Plan and Protocols, including the Program Security and Cybersecurity Plan, and best industry practices. In order to be successful in this role, you will need to have prior experience in marine operations and advanced marine navigation technologies, including AIS, GPS, radar and marine radio communications. This is a security sensitive position, successful candidates will be subject to background checks.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the operating the SeaCOP/SECurus computer system in the Control Room)
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of SeaCOP/SECurus Control Room
  • Analyze and take appropriate action at all detected anomalous conditions
  • Maintain continuous vigilance of SeaCOP/SECurus during work shift
  • Investigate all identified events through to their conclusions
  • Monitor terminal system performance and notify operations when maintenance and/or repairs are needed
  • Ability to move from task to task fluently, stay organized and prioritize tasks/daily work
  • Ensure strong communications between all staff work groups during daily operations and at shift change
  • Ensure all spreadsheets and record keeping are completed and kept up to date
  • Adhere to the Program Health and Safety Plan
  • Perform all actions in accordance with Program Operations Manual
  • Participate in an evaluation method to assess program strengths and identify areas for improvement (Key Performance Indicators)
  • Participate in Program Training initiatives
  • Contribute to a culture where communication and knowledge are prioritized
  • Actively seek information that is relevant to your position
  • Contribute to work with cross-functional teams
  • Assist in analyzing program risk
  • When directed, meet with stakeholders to make communication easy and transparent regarding project issues and decisions on services
  • Confirm that vessels adhere to safe navigation in the Straits
  • Assist in scheduling boat operators for 24-hour inspections of waterways and boat traffic
  • Assist in developing and implementing all work plans and enforcing site safety plans
  • Assist in ensure that goals are met in areas including customer satisfaction, safety, quality, and team member performance
  • Assist in implementing and managing changes and interventions to ensure project goals are achieved
  • Provide operational assistance when escalating Program operational posture during emergencies
  • Perform other duties (temporary or permanent) as assigned by management

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • 2+ years of general working knowledge of control room operations and protocols
  • Experience from marine operations such as USCG, USN, oil and gas industry operations, commercial and cargo vessel operations, Great Lakes marine operations
  • General working knowledge of commercial vessel and small boat operations and suitable navigational skills
  • Experience using maritime Automatic Information Systems (AIS)
  • Understanding of radio location technologies and their use in marine navigation processes
  • Must demonstrate ability to convert scope and project information into detailed methodology, project approach, resource requirements, and costs
  • This is a security sensitive position. The final candidate(s) will be required to undergo a security screening and complete and sign a non-Disclosure Agreement related to all Program plans, protocols and procedures
  • Good driving record (3 points or less)

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Accredited Marine Training
