WHAT YOUR DAY AS A SCHOOL BASED COUNSELOR ENTAILS:

As a School Based Counselor, your typical work schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday. In this role, you will play a crucial part in supporting the emotional well-being of students. Your responsibilities include conducting counseling sessions, both individually and in groups, to address a range of emotional and behavioral issues. You will collaborate closely with school staff and families to develop effective intervention plans and provide crisis intervention when necessary, all while maintaining accurate and confidential client records.

Additionally, you will offer training and education on various mental health topics, including substance abuse prevention, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and stress management, both to school personnel and students. You will help create a positive school climate by facilitating activities and providing individual student interventions for consultation, skill-building, and psychoeducation. Your role extends to participating in school meetings such as Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 planning, conducting student screenings, and making referrals for services and supports.

One of your essential tasks will be to foster constructive relationships between the school, families, and the larger community. Your work will encompass a blend of services tailored to meet the unique needs of each school, ensuring that students receive the support and guidance they need to thrive academically and emotionally.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SCHOOL BASED COUNSELOR:

  • Master's degree in Behavioral Sciences (social work, counseling, or psychology)
  • Flexibility and adaptability to school policies and schedules
  • Ability to work remotely when needed

Experience in a school setting is preferred but not required.
