Structural Steel Estimator

This position is responsible for delivering competitive cost estimates on new bids and executing awarded projects to ensure their completion within the parameters of the established project budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

1. Conduct initial analysis of drawings and specifications to ensure required documentation is present and determine scope of work.

2. Develop full-scope estimates based on Bid-Build, Design-Build or CM/GC construction documents.

3. Critically analyze bid documents and understand risk and opportunities and articulate those to management.

4. Help contractors prepare budgets.

5. Perform complete structural steel and misc. metals takeoffs.

6. Prepare proposals.

7. Deliver proposals and exchange project information with clients.

8. Create and manage RFI’s.

9. Coordinate with sub-contractors, suppliers and clients.

10. Work with CEO and General Manager to ensure contracts being bid meet agreed criteria.

11. Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

12. Manage detailing, fabrication, and installation schedules to meet the needs of projects.

13. Identify, price, and settle change orders.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:

1. High School Diploma or GED

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

1. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.

2. Knowledge of Tekla EPM (FabSuite) is strongly preferred.

3. Familiar with AWS D1.1 and AISC Code of Standard Practice.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

1. Experienced in reading structural & architectural design drawings, detailed shop drawings, measurements and weld symbols

2. Able to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measurement

3. Two years minimum experience in steel estimating/project management.

SKILLS / ABILITIES:

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

2. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines

3. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines,

and standard accepted practice.

1. FINGER DEXTERITY: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.

2. TALKING: Especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.

3. AVERAGE HEARING: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

4. AVERAGE VISUAL ABILITIES: Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.

5. PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Sedentary work. Sitting most of the time. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally. Walks 300 yards to access fabrication shop.

6. WORKING CONDITIONS: Office, yard, and production shop areas, active job sites.

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION:

1. REASONING ABILITY: Able to apply logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

2. MATHEMATICS ABILITY: Able to use limited algebra, exponents, and geometry.

3. LANGUAGE ABILITY: Able to read scientific and technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and legal documents.

4. COMMUNICATION ABILITY: Able to prepare reports and manuals. Ability to prepare and make comprehensive presentations, participate in formal debate, communicate extemporaneously, and professionally communicate before a limited audience.
