The Director, Patent Attorney will assist with expanding the IPR function with local presence at Genmab’s US site based in Princeton, NJ, and with in-house knowledge of US patent law.  Your job will include preparing IP strategies, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, reviewing documents prior to publication, evaluating third party patent rights, reviewing IP clauses in agreements and ad hoc IP questions and tasks. This involves being part of cross functional groups, as IP Lead, with other individuals within the company to drive the development of new products and technologies. You will work closely together with colleagues in the organization and the rest of the IPR team, and with external collaboration partners and vendors, with the overall goal to support the commercialization of new and innovative medicines for the benefit of patients. You will be part of the IPR team reporting to the Senior Director, Head of IPR.  

This person will be based out of Princeton, NJ and will be onsite 60% of the time.



Responsibilities

  • Define and drive coherent patent strategies for assigned projects .
  • Lead filing and prosecution of patent applications, and preparation of patent reports.
  • Present recommendations for actions against third party patent rights.
  • Survey third party patent positions, file relevant actions, and solicit legal opinions against third party patent rights.
  • Oversee freedom-to-operate analyses in new and existing projects.
  • Provide general advice on patent questions on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Review documents, such as manuscripts, conference presentations and regulatory documents prior to publication.
  • Drive collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure strong alignment of all IP matters with overall business needs and strategies.
  • Act as a key point of contact for IP matters for critical projects.
  • Assist with IP clauses in agreements.
  • Assist with keeping the whole IPR department updated on US patent law and provide input to strategies incorporating US requirements.

Requirements:

  • JD or LL.M. from an accredited law school with a minimum 8+ years of experience as a patent attorney for or in the pharma/biotech industry.
  • Qualified US Patent Attorney.
  • 5+ years of experience as an in-house patent attorney.
  • Significant experience in defining patent strategies, filing and prosecution of patent applications, and leading patent processes.
  • Experience in conducting/overseeing patentability searches.
  • Experience in conducting/overseeing freedom-to-operate searches.
  • Significant experience in analyzing third party patent rights.
  • Significant experience in preparing strategies for third party patent rights.
  • Experience in guiding the organization on IP matters.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

For US based candidates, the proposed salary band for this position is as follows:

$165,000.00---$275,000.00

The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation, such as bonuses.
