General Engineer
Location: Ithaca, NY
Job Type: Full-Time & In-Person

Ecolectro develops specialty polymers and electrolytic cells for green hydrogen production, fuel cell technology, and electrolyzers. Our breakthrough alkaline exchange materials exhibit high ionic conductivity and exceptionally high chemical stability. These desirable characteristics reduce device costs and enable scalable green hydrogen, promoting access to clean energy and economically sustainable fuels.


We have an opening for a motivated scientist or engineer to join our expanding team. The primary focus of this role is developing new electrolyzer systems and identifying and resolving engineering issues. This position supports the research and development of custom monomer and polymer electrolytes that are incorporated into electrochemical devices.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform research and analysis on various designs for electrolyzer and balance of plant components.
  • Build test stands for evaluation of the performance and reliability of the systems.
  • Support design and manufacturing of components for electrolysis cells, mechanical components, and system designs.
  • Assist with power electronics equipment selection for hydrogen electrolyzers including power conversion, voltage and
  • current regulation, and integration with renewable energy systems and utility grids.
  • Tune materials, components, and interfaces to fit functional requirements.
  • Propose approaches to overcome engineering challenges including scaling up, high pressure, and heat exchange.
  • Coordinate design changes with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Carefully document all testing procedures in accordance with company guidelines including safety protocols and
  • standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Effectively collaborate in interdisciplinary teams working towards common goals.
  • Occasionally travel on-site to partner or customer locations.
  • Present and submit detailed reports on research carried out using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or similar software.
  • Prepare and evaluate technical plans, reports, presentations, and proposals to support project success.
  • Written and verbal communication of ideas and results to internal science and business teams.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline or related field.
  • 1-3 years of academic or industrial experience in engineering design and development.
  • Experience in programming (e.g. Python or R) or CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks or AutoCAD).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a focus on innovative and efficient solutions.
  • Proven strong communication and teamwork skills to work effectively in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work independently, plan optimization tests, interpret results, and identify next steps and potential pitfalls.
  • Good organizational skills, record keeping, and follow-through will be integral to success.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of power electronics, voltage and current regulation, and integration with utility grids.
  • Basic knowledge of renewable energy, electrochemistry, machine learning, or data science.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC-based control systems, high pressure assemblies, electrical wiring, welding, cooling plants,
  • or chemical handling.
  • Proficiency with operation and troubleshooting of industrial gas systems and components.
  • Experience design for failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA).
  • Familiarity of codes, regulations, and ASME standards and certifications.
  • Experience with specification, design, and testing of electrical components and equipment for electrochemical systems.
