Job Title: Cut Off Operator

Location: Laurens, SC

Status of Hire: full-time, direct hire, non-exempt

Compensation: $22/hr-$25/hr

Hours: 1st shift – 6:00am-2:30pm

Reports to: Tube Mill Production Manager/Mill Supervisor

Summary: The Cut Off (Saw) Operator will play a crucial role in our production process, ensuring the efficient operation of saw equipment and contributing to uptime, product quality, and overall mill performance.

Job Duties:

• Takes direction from and Reviews Mill schedule with Mill Operator
• Work safely following Haz Com & workplace safety practices as outlined by Custom Steel Supply policy & OSHA.
• Receive verbal and/or written instructions from team leaders/mill managers.
• Sets up cutoff to match mill schedule (tube length) and constantly monitor lengths
• Watches cutoff during operation to maintain blade condition
• Cuts samples as required and performs destructive tests as required: retaining Samples
• Records tests (weld, crush tests, integrity) to turn in to Mill Operator at the end of the shift
• Removes cutoff slugs to hopper as required
• Changes NDT (eddy current) and TH tooling during changeovers
• Alerts Mill Operator of any difficulties with machinery
• Work from rolling schedules to ensure proper processing of material sizes, gauges, and lengths.
• Perform quality checks on size, wall, length, and flash removal to ensure product compliance with specifications.
• Check and adjust turkshead rolls to maintain straightness tolerances.
• Assist in mill changeovers; set up traveling cutoff saw for each size and maintenance personnel with equipment repairs.
• Change saw blades and dies; adjust guide rolls as required.
• Set up and operate diagraph printer and perform cut pull tests for each new heat.
• Complete all required operating reports and quality reports.
• Clean slugs from saw house, under exit conveyor, and handling areas.
• Support other operators during breakdowns, bottlenecks, and scheduled downtime.
• Report any irregularities or malfunctions to managers or maintenance.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area and equipment.
• Adjusts mill setup during operation and as needed to meet schedule
• Works closely with both Mill Crane Operator, Cut-Off Operator, End Welder, and the multi-craft Technician to monitor the entirety of the production process.
• Cross-Train to a full working understanding and knowledge of all positions as to be able to direct as needed.
• Operate overhead and Dual Trolley cranes to support tube mill operations as needed.
• Follow verbal and/or written instructions and comply with safety protocols and PPE requirements.
• Support other operators during breakdowns, bottlenecks, and scheduled downtime.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
• 2+ years of experience in a steel manufacturing facility.
• Ability to follow written/verbal instructions, basic computer skills, and proficiency in reading measuring devices/equipment and basic math.
• Direct, hands-on experience operating and managing tube mills and related equipment
• Proven experience, with the ability to act proactively in achieving performance goals.
• Strong technical knowledge of tube mill processes, equipment, and materials.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Forklift and crane certification required; ability to operate forklifts, cranes, and hand tools.
• Effective listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Visual acuity for reading and recording numerical data.
• Attention to detail, dependability, and professionalism.
• Tube mill manufacturing experience preferred.
• Solid understanding of safety regulations and best practices in a manufacturing environment.

Physical Requirements:

• Operation of various machinery and equipment, including hand tools, overhead cranes, forklifts, heavy machinery, welding, and cutting equipment.
• The physical demands include the ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and work in various environmental conditions.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements include eye protection, hearing protection, foot protection, and various other types of protections as recommended.
• Must be able to stand and walk for up to 6-8 hours per day or for extended periods to cover shift needs.
• Flexibility to bend, twist, stoop, sit, kneel, crawl, push, and pull, with the capability to reach in all directions.
