Purpose of the position

The Soil/Geotechnical Assistant Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Soils and Geotechnical laboratory, which includes the communication, talent, and resources that play a vital role in the success of the laboratory. It is expected that this role should average a 50/50 balance between the two departments.

Key responsibilities & duties

1. Ensuring company policies are followed.

2. Training and developing new employees.

3. Providing leadership and direction to all employees.

4. Support Manager as needed.

5. Completing assignments given by the manager accurately and efficiently.

6. Assists with overseeing the compliance of A2LA ISO17025 policies and requirements of the Geotechnical Laboratory.

7. Maintaining lab standards including cleanliness of laboratory and QC (QC spreadsheets).

8. Taking disciplinary action when necessary.

9. Ensuring health, safety, and security rules are followed.

10. Organizing employee schedules and delegate daily tasks to employees.

11. Perform maintenance and work on equipment as needed.

12. Hold daily huddle meetings daily with the Soils & Geotechnical Department/Staff.

13. Assists with worksheet entry in a timely manner to ensure daily workflow can progress.

14. Helps with coordinating weekly team building exercises.

15. Informs manager of areas that needs more efficiency or new equipment.

16. Provides feedback/input for reviews and actively participates in them with manager.

17. Report reviewal as needed and in manager’s absence.

18. Approves time off for employees and oversees personnel needs in instances of absences.

19. Attend required monthly Management/Leadership seminars to be scheduled through HR on SkillPath. Coordinate schedules with all management staff to ensure floor coverage is possible.

Academic & trade qualifications

A four-year degree in a science field is preferred. A high school diploma is required. Management experience is preferred.

Work experience & skills

Laboratory experience is preferred along with experience in the management of time, talent, and resources. Some sort of leadership training is expected as this position would lead approximately 5-15 employees. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of an organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Microsoft Office including Excel. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
