as we strive to build a world class EH&S team at Gilead in Foster City.  The successful candidate will be joining a highly motivated and cross functional team to develop and elevate a proactive EH&S culture across our Foster City campus via facilitation of Biosafety Program.  You must be an independent self-starter with superior analysis, multitasking and problem solving skills for simple to complex situations.  You will be relied upon as a subject matter expert in the areas for which you are responsible, and also should be eager to learn about and support other areas of the team when needed.  This individual must possess great interpersonal capabilities that facilitate explanation of complex topics straightforwardly to educate and influence colleagues and customers to ensure successful implementation of EH&S programs and directives as assigned. This role will be the Biological Safety Officer, program manager.  The successful candidate will use effective time management skills with minimal supervision on projects of moderate to challenging complexity.  This will include identification, development, update and maintenance of compliance and safety programs, protocols, and procedures in collaboration with research staff.General Responsibilities of EH&S Team MembersThe Senior Specialist EH&S will serve as an agent of change within their areas of responsibility while effectively ensuring compliance and proliferation of best practices throughout customer organizations. Basic essential duties for all EH&S team members include:Identify, document and reduce potential workplace hazards, including accident investigation, through corrective actions and making recommendations to management.Develop, communicate and conduct audits, inspections, training and program development.Provide program specific and general EH&S training, including New Hire Orientation for employees.Serving on the Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call availabilityEstablish a positive rapport with staff, scientists and management to ensure a high level of customer service and serve as a primary point of contact for customer groups.Assist with implementing general elements of the Foster City EH&S Program, as defined by local, state and federal agencies.Essential Duties and Job Functions of the RoleSpecific responsibilities for this role focus on independent management, with minimal supervision, in leading the Biosafety program and serving as the Biological Safety Officer (BSO).Major Responsibilities of the Position:Overseeing compliance as defined by the Bloodborne Pathogen and Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standards, Medical Waste regulations, and all other etiologic agents use requirements from federal, state, and local regulationsProvide technical and regulatory compliance advice assessing physical and health risks associated with the use of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, human and non-human primate tissue or cells, and organisms containing recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule researchCoordinate Biosafety and IBC meetings and perform risk assessments of all research protocols submitted through the Biological Materials Use Authorization processCoordinate third party resources providing occupational health and medical surveillance support of the Biosafety ProgramMaintain accurate and up to date inventory of all biologics used on the Foster City campusCoordinate Biosafety efforts with EH&S team members, working in collaboration to ensure compliance with our Gilead policy and programFor EH&S programs assigned, ensure program and reporting requirements, as set by local, state and federal agencies, and as defined by internal policies.Review facility/space designs of renovations or new constructions to identify potential EH&S impacts and provide recommendations to proactively manage these impacts.Coordinate commissioning and decommissioning activities of laboratory assets and work areas as required.Knowledge, Experience, and Skills RequiredWorking knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT and other related regulatory requirements.Demonstrated experience in interacting with regulatory agencies.Demonstrated experience in working in collaborative teams.Demonstrated experience with working under minimal supervision.Demonstrated success with leading manager and peers without authority. Anticipate needs and problems while creating and implementing solutions.Excellent written and oral communication skills.The ability to effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace is required.8+ years experience in Biosafety/Preclinical EH&S.  Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industry preferred.Bachelor of Science in Chemistry/Biology/Environmental or related field, advanced degree a plus.Relevant experience may supersede degree requirements.The salary range for this position is: $143,225.00 - $185,350.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
