General Information:

Job title: Pharmacy Technician

Schedules Available: Full-time, 80 hours per pay period; Monday - Friday, 7:00 - 4:30pm (shifts vary)

Weekend rotation: Every 4th weekend, 7:00am to 3:00pm

Holiday rotation: Every 4th holiday, 7:00am to 3:00pm

Position Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician position provides service to any and all departments of Mile Bluff Medical Center hospital and clinics, including inventory management, acquisition, receiving, distribution, and dispensing of medications, billing activities, clinical interaction with the patient, working directly with nursing and medical staff, and management of the preparation of IV medications and chemotherapy.

Position Responsibilities:

Pharmacy Tech I - Non-Certified:

  • Manage the pharmacy inventory including the acquisition, receiving, stocking, and distribution of all medications, including managing shortages and recalls.
  • Maintain a safe, organized work environment that allows for the efficient, effective delivery of pharmacy services
  • Enter data in computer system, including purchase orders, stock orders, requisitions, and disbursements.
  • Remove unneeded or outdated drugs from stock and prepares for return or disposal.
  • Perform general clerical duties for the department.
  • Prepare, fill, and compound drug and IV orders by physicians and other authorized personnel.
  • Store and preserve biologicals, vaccines, and serums.
  • Check incoming shipments and arrange for their storage.
  • Maintain narcotic inventory and other records such as prescriptions, tax-free alcohol, and quality assurance.
  • Participate in in-service training.
  • Charge patients' medicines.
  • Fill bulk IV's and IV piggyback solutions.
  • Responsible for drug distributions on the floors, nursing station inspections, outdated drugs, and running the pharmacy dart fills.

Pharmacy Technician II - Certified:

  • Capable of performing all Pharmacy Technician I responsibilities proficiently and efficiently.
  • Manage and maintain the pharmacy and hospital inventory of medications including having an adequate supply of formulary approved medications available in all areas needed, managing emergency medication inventory and placement, managing shortages and drug recalls, and completing all elements of acquisition and return of medications to our wholesaler or the manufacturer
  • Actively participate in the distribution of medications to our clinics, hospital clinical departments, automated dispensing cabinets, and all emergency medication supplies. This includes overseeing and managing the inventory in each of these are areas as appropriate.
  • Safely and efficiently preparing IV admixtures, Chemotherapy, and other medications including demonstrating competency in all appropriate preparation techniques, math skills, and safety practices.
  • Participate in the clinical management of our patients including attending emergency events such as codes or rapid responses, obtaining medication histories at the time of admission, and/or tracking lab values with the pharmacist to support their work.
  • Provide support to the pharmacists, patient billing, and coding to ensure an accurate and complete bill for the patient and hospital to include processing charges and credits, investigating administration questions, and working with staff to make sure all items are billed correctly and accurately.
  • Work effectively with nursing staff to ensure the proper use of the automated dispensing cabinets, emergency medications, and IV pumps, as well as, working with Infusion staff to provide timely, appropriate care to their patients.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Position Requirements:

  • HS Diploma required, Associates Degree preferred.
  • Must hold and maintain Pharmacy Technician certification, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • 1+ years related work experience preferred.
  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration required or must have applied for pharmacy technician registration with the State of Wisconsin by hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Intermediate to expert proficiency with computers is required.
  • Requires assessment, evaluation, and decision-making skills.
  • Must possess exceptional clinical skills and maintain knowledge in caring for newborn through geriatric patients.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical competency, including in the care of antepartum, intrapartum, and post partum patient and newborn.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy law.
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication, oral and written communication, and problem-solving skills.
