Title: Industrial Finishing Systems Engineer
Reports to: Director ENSY Operations

Users of our efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solutions include final consumers, contractors, and industrial manufacturing companies. The company operates as two divisions, Decorative Finishing (DF) and Industrial Solutions (IS).
 
Position Objective

The IS division Systems Engineer will support the Engineered Systems (ENSY) team and the sales team by developing and delivering industrial finishing system solutions according to all internal and external requirements for cost, quality, and schedule. The goal is to deliver the desired customer experience, continually improve customer satisfaction and retention, and support market share growth.

Responsibilities

  • Systems engineering:
    • Comprehend customer requirements and provide technical knowledge, expertise, and advice; make appropriate recommendations as part of RFQ and proposal process to ensure development of robust designs to meet application needs.
    • Research and evaluate products, equipment, systems, and processes; specify system components and direct modification of products to ensure conformance with all specifications, applicable agency requirements, and other regulations.
    • Develop project schedules and produce timely and detailed reports for assigned projects.
    • Direct engineering staff as needed to ensure work packages are completed on time and within budget; check technical designs and drawings to ensure that they are complete, accurate and followed correctly.
  • On-site project management: oversee the preassembly and subsequent installation of systems at customer locations to ensure an effective commissioning process.
  • Assist installation and commissioning teams at customer sites with mechanical, electrical, testing, and customer support, diagnosing errors or technical problems and determining proper solutions.
  • Contribute to postmortem meetings; examine the outcome of past projects to ensure lessons learned are as effective and impactful as possible in helping the team improve.
  • Sales and service team support: actively support sales and service as a subject matter expert, conducting joint customer visits as needed.
  • Utilize Wagner product and system configurator tools to complete budgetary and firm proposal pricing and documents with assistance from project management as needed.
  • Follow all company’s procedures and protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Relationship To Others

Frequent contact with customers, the Wagner engineering and technical team, project management, sales, and others on the ENSY team to ensure projects are properly engineered and delivered per customer and all applicable technical requirements.  Direct engineering resources and support project management, sales, and service to deliver the desired customer experience starting with the quotation process through system commissioning and customer approval. 

 

Dimensions of Position

Accountable to ensure proper system engineering is completed for assigned projects within the portfolio.  On-site project management and coordination with operations and the installation team, building positive relationships within the organization and with customers.  Builds self-knowledge and company knowledge through experience, training, and development opportunities, sharing information across the organization.  

 

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with 7+ years’ experience in the industrial paint finishing industry, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by the hiring manager and Human Resources.
  • Proven ability to engineer multiple projects simultaneously with successful problem solving to enable commissioning and achieve full customer acceptance.
  • 2+ years of AutoCAD experience.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years project engineering and/or project management in paint delivery and application system installations.
  • Project Management certification (e.g. PMP).
  • Solid modeling experience.
  • Personnel management / leadership experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport, able to work on assignments outside of the U.S.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of process automation / PLC systems, preferably Beckhoff & Siemens; ability to troubleshoot, test, repair, and service technical equipment.
  • Proficient in application of agency requirements (CSA, FM, UL, ULC, CE, NFPA, NEC, OSHA) and engineering documentation standards per ASME/ANSI. Has a detailed knowledge of the competence in complex situations.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of how your actions can affect profitability of a project.
  • Decision-making: exhibits sound and accurate judgement, able to explain reasoning and communicate clearly, both written and orally, with all project stakeholders.
  • Team leader: tactful, dependable, reacts well under pressure, responds to internal and external customer’s needs promptly and professionally.
  • Intermediate skill in AutoCAD, MS Project (or other project management software), and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office, on customer sites, or home office. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting with long periods of computer work and phone usage. Willing to be “Hands-On” in the Technical Center, warehouse, assembly area, and in the field; may require lifting and carrying of materials and equipment, and operating vehicles and simple tools to all safety requirements. Ability to work flexible shifts and adapt to changing work schedules with travel domestically and internationally, up to 20%.
