Job Summary:

 

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial statements, analyzing and reconciling accounts, preparing complex journal entries to record financial data, cost allocation, overseeing cash management and banking activity, assisting with budget development and forecasts, and annual audit support. This position serves as a key resource for the College and provides daily financial oversight to ensure that the financial records are complete, accurate and comply with generally accepted accounting principles, regulations, and college policies. The Senior Accountant will meet academic and professional qualifications, demonstrate dedication to academic excellence and student-centered education, and will support the mission and objectives of Bay Mills Community College.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Reconciles the bank and investment account statements to the general ledger and prepares complex journal entries to record transactions.
  • Manages banking relationships and works closely with the Vice President for Business and Finance to manage the Investment and Endowment Accounts.
  • Oversees cash management/banking activity for the organization.
  • Reviews payment requests for appropriateness, proper authorization, and compliance with College policies and procedures.
  • Gathers financial information, performs tax research, and prepares year-end tax filings.
  • Analyzes and reconciles balance sheet accounts and prepares journal entries to correct or update accounts as needed. This would include student accounts receivable, cash, bank, credit cards, payroll liabilities, and other receivables or liabilities.
  • Prepares the monthly space cost and indirect cost allocation entries.
  • Reviews, prepares, documents, and processes journal entries for the internal service funds, trust and agency, and General Fund financial statements. May also prepare other financial statements as needed to meet deadlines.
  • Serves as a backup for approving the monthly electronic transfer of state aid funds.  
  • Prepares worksheets to assist in the preparation of budgets and grant projections.
  • Recommends, updates, and writes policies and procedures.
  • Prepares accounting schedules to comply with new GASB standards, such as GASB 87 – Leases and GASB 96 - Subscription-Based Information Technology Arrangements.
  • Assists with the annual audit; prepares audit working papers and provides supporting documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Possess a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in daily work and other projects; ability to meet communicated schedules and deadlines; exercise substantial independent judgment, and work with limited supervision.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), governmental accounting standards, the Single Audit Act, and OMB Circulars and guidance pertaining to grant administration.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with external organizations as well as establish and maintain effective interdepartmental communications and relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, exercise substantial independent judgment, and work with limited supervision.
  • Advanced software experience, specifically with accounting and student database systems.
  • Must have an excellent past work record.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.


Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Master’s Degree in Business, Administration, Accounting or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in higher education, governmental, non-profit, or governmental accounting.
  • Excellent written communication and organization skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, college and departmental committee experience preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.
