Mechanic                                                                                                                      PW-Fleet/2

Public Works – Fleet


JOB SUMMARY


This position is responsible for performing complex, skilled repair, and maintenance functions on City vehicles and equipment.

 

MAJOR DUTIES


  1. Changes tires.
  2. Troubleshoots any electrical issue.
  3. Builds hydraulic hoses.
  4. Welds cracked or broken equipment.
  5. Fabricates various objects and tools.
  6. Rebuilds engines on various cars and heavy equipment.
  7. Replaces transmissions.
  8. Keeps a safe and clean work area.
  9. Fills out work orders.
  10. Services HVAC systems.
  11. Drops vehicles off for alignment and warranty repair.
  12. Repairs various small equipment.
  13. Responds to service calls.
  14. Coordinates purchases with various vendors.
  15. Loads or unloads delivery trucks.
  16. Replaces various auto body parts.
  17. Verifies vehicle serviceability.
  18. Keeps shop equipment operational.
  19. Maintains vehicle’s condition.
  20. Maintains vehicle records and performs service repairs.
  21. Performs all other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  1. Knowledge of changing tires.
  2. Knowledge of maintenance and repair to include electrical issues.
  3. Knowledge of building hydraulic hoses.
  4. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  5. Knowledge of fabrication and welding techniques.
  6. Knowledge of building engines.
  7. Knowledge of replacing transmissions.
  8. Knowledge of a/c units and servicing.
  9. Knowledge of purchasing from vendors.
  10. Knowledge of loading and unloading trucks.
  11. Knowledge of body parts.
  12. Knowledge of shop operation.
  13. Skill in oral and written communication.
  14. Skill in interpersonal relations.
  15. Skill in operating various types of equipment.
  16. Skill in operating and maintaining assigned equipment.
  17. Skill in interpreting safety rules, operation, and maintenance instructions, procedures manuals, and so forth.
  18. Skill in maintaining a clean and safe work area.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES


Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, workplace safety standards, and vehicle and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of variety of vehicle and equipment maintenance duties. Getting into tight spaces that are difficult to reach and the heat contribute to the complexity of this position.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform complex, skilled repair, and maintenance functions on City vehicles and equipment. Success in this position contributes to well-maintained city vehicles and equipment.

  • Contacts are typically with Fire Department, Police Department, City Hall, Public Works, and various vendors.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, and using a sense of smell.
  • The work is performed in a loud place. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.   


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • More than one year of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
