Seasonal Maintenance Workers  to work full time in the City of Port Townsend Streets Division or the Parks Division.  

(4) persons needed to work a 4 month term either April 1 - July 31 or May 1 - August 31

These are important seasonal positions that assist our regular work crews with maintaining safe and attractive streets and parks facilities for our residents and visitors. 

$16.00/hour, non-benefitted, 40 hours per week    

Must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license and pass criminal background check. Job requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle driving a pickup with a small trailer to work sites, work with limited direction, and safely move and operate hand and small power tools.  Work may include vegetation control, landscaping, parks custodial, and working within road right-of-ways.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS FOR PARKS AND STREETS POSITIONS BELOW: 

 

STREETS/STORMWATER/SEWER COLLECTION DIVISION JOB SUMMARY

Working Hours:   7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.   Monday - Friday

 Under general supervision performs a variety of maintenance and repair work to various streets, wastewater collection and stormwater systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely operate portable equipment and small hand and power tools necessary to maintain City
  • Assist in patching roads, loading, raking and shoveling
  • Assist in the maintenance and repairs of wastewater and storm water
  • Perform a variety of routine repair and maintenance tasks on
  • Serve as a flagger for traffic
  • Assist in the painting of street parking and
  • Set out and take down traffic control
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Crew Chief or his/her designee.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proper safety practices concerning the operation of equipment and power tools; methods employed  in basic  maintenance work.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in traffic control.
  • Ability to adhere to health and safety requirements in the workplace

 

QUALIFICATIONS  (Required)

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
  • Must pass criminal background check

Additional consideration may be given for the following qualifications:

  • Previous experience performing general maintenance work using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, small power equipment,
  • Washington State Flagger  certification  course
  • First AidCPR

 

PARKS DIVISION JOB SUMMARY

Working Hours:   Variable schedule to include some evenings and weekends

Under general supervision performs a variety of custodial, maintenance and repair work to various Park and Recreation facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs various maintenance, landscaping, and custodial tasks to provide care and upkeep of parks, open space, trails and facilities.
  • Safely operates equipment such as riding and push lawn mowers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, edgers and hedgers.
  • Manually removes unwanted weeds from developed landscapes and/or native areas
  • Cleans and maintains public restrooms, picnic shelters, picnic tables, garbage cans and other facilities
  • Records record keeping of work activities in online work order system

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic landscaping and grounds maintenance practices, landscaping equipment, power and hand tools and custodial practices.
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools following oral and written instructions
  • Ability to adhere to WISHA and DOSH health and safety requirements in the workplace
  • Ability to maintain daily work activity records using a computer

 

QUALIFICATIONS  (Required)

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
  • Must pass criminal background check

Additional consideration may be given for the following qualifications:

  • Previous experience working for a Parks and Recreation department/organization/agency; experience in a public setting; horticulture experience including local plant identification skills; equipment maintenance experience; custodial experience.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS for Streets and Parks Seasonal Maintenance Workers

  • Duties are performed primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather.
  • Walking for extended periods of time.
  • Repeated bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  • Vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected)
  • Requires full range of motor skills and dexterity to operate hand held tools.

  • Punctual and consistent attendance
  • Possess a Washington Driver's License and maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
