Job Summary:

The Senior R&D Packaging Engineer leads the packaging development required by Materne North America’s marketing team, facilitates the launch of new products, participates in the industrial application and proposes optimization of existing process/packaging. A successful person in this role is a pro-active thought leader who seizes opportunities for improvement. They demonstrated past success in executing internal and external projects in a manufacturing environment.

Job Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Manage complex local projects
    • Initiates project development and continuous improvement plans
    • Initiates change, improvement & influence decisions at the project level.
    • Looks for new packaging and processes if needed.
    • Develop packaging with suppliers meeting internal specifications
    • Cost analysis of all packaging solutions
    • Up to date on new packaging technology by attending conferences, classes and exhibitions.
    • Participates in Supplier Audits and Qualifications
    • Identify and lead root cause analysis of non-compliant supplier packaging.
    • Validates packaging for conformity to guidelines, part quality, material handling, and stacking integrity
  • Support cross-functional relationships
    • Support the study of Marketing briefs.
    • Lead industrial qualification trials
    • Regular updates with R&D Packaging Manager
    • Lead supplier compliance, packaging re-engineering and standard pack optimization initiatives
    • Manages/coaches and assists in the development of R&D technicians and engineers
    • Leads the development, validation and implementation of new products & packaging designs
    • Leads technicians to master essential skills/techniques
  • Maintain production awareness and compatibility:
    • Carry out optimized plan of palletization.
    • Stay informed on the production planning and bring product’s knowledge to solve problems with the production team.
    • Participate to solve quality issues and customer’s complaints.
  • Lead Industrialization trials
    • Organize and validate logistical trials.
    • Design and document trial protocol and results.
    • Conduct tests related to the operation of plant equipment and processes.
    • Perform production tests on operations such as innovation and improvements.
  • All other duties as assigned

Key Performance Indicator (KPI):

  • Deliver OTIF (On Time In Full)
  • Ideas are proactively proposed during the year
    • New products, Operational Improvements, Productivity Improvements, Cost Savings, Speed to Market, Innovation and New ways of working

Position Requirements:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Science / Engineering

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience required.
  • 5+ Years of CPG experience required
    • Experience in the food industry working on the packaging or in the packaging industry preferred
    • Experience supporting manufacturing environment is preferred.

PHYSICAL & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to travel 30-50% of time
  • Ability to travel internationally
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 30lbs
  • Must be able to work in normal office conditions, lab and in the manufacturing plant.
  • Must be able to wear PPE
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per day and be on their feet for extended periods of time.
