Organizational Unit Overview:

Our mission is to deliver personalized, proactive, and holistic support that empowers and inspires each learner to reach academic, personal, and professional goals and to flourish at Brody and beyond. The Office of Student Success and Wellness supports the rigorous academic requirements of graduate school and medical school but, more importantly, for the “whole” Brody learner. Our helping framework is based on elements of the SSIPP model of holistic learner support (Karp & Stacey, 2013).

We emphasize information sharing, skill-building opportunities, affective support, and developmental learning opportunities to nurture the personal, professional, and leadership development of diverse Brody learners.

Moreover, we believe that the best support for learners in graduate school and medical school is holistic, sustained throughout the academic experience as well as strategic, integrated, proactive, and personalized.

We utilize a framework for supporting learning success and development that emphasizes proactive intervention tailored to the situation of each learner. Interventions range from those designed to respond to general concerns to those intended to provide learners with more intensive support.

Job Duties :

The Student Success Coach will work as a member of the OSSaW team to help Brody medical students and graduate students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success and well-being. This position will also work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration, and offices across Academic Affairs units.


60% Academic Coaching

Provides coaching assessment and intervention to aid the development of effective study strategies, time management, organizational skills, and other factors that impact academic preparation and performance.

Provides coaching assessment and intervention related to test preparation for course exams, licensure exams, and high-stakes testing such as USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2.

Coaches students on self-directed learning skills, self-advocacy, and resiliency skills and assists students in identifying and overcoming obstacles that may impede academic, personal, or professional success.

Conducts coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their own performance, identify goals and develop academic success plans.

30% Academic Monitoring/Evaluation

Monitors progress of students on caseload with proactive outreach and communication as well as check-ins and scheduled meetings while also responding to students’ questions, concerns, and needs.

Develops and implements procedures for coaching intake, coaching services, and monitoring student progress

Compile and analyze data to evaluate and document coaching services and their impact on medical student and graduate student persistence and success.

10% Administrative

Collaborates with faculty, staff, administration, and team members in organizing and delivering USMLE Step 1 support and USMLE Step 2 support

Refers students to additional academic support resources as appropriate.

Maintains files for each student who receives services

Creates and delivers workshops on various topics that support student success and well-being.

Provides training and supervision support for medical student and graduate student peer tutors and peer coaches.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Master’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Student Affairs or related field with demonstrated knowledge of coaching models that support student success.

Demonstrated experience in an academic setting providing academic support or student development assistance to diverse students.

Demonstrated knowledge of various factors that impact academic performance, e.g. social, emotional, cultural, and cognitive, for diverse higher-education students.

Demonstrated experience in conducting educational workshops, seminars, and/or small group sessions.

Demonstrated experience in working with tutoring and/or peer-assisted learning programs.

Experience working in a team setting that includes students and colleagues.

Experience handling confidential issues.

Have experience working with graduate students, medical students, or other professional students.

Have experience with standardized examinations (e.g. GRE, MAT, NBME Subject examinations, USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3)

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Preference will be given to applicants with experience and demonstrated achievement as an academic coach or experience working with students as an educator or in another capacity to promote student academic success.
