About this job
Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.
Our Codebase team of Organism Engineers (OEs) is the core of Ginkgo's strain engineering platform. We believe biology is a unique engineering substrate that comes pre-loaded with startlingly brilliant code we didn't write. Enabled by our high-throughput foundry, we study and design the most efficient way to create a new organism using the most advanced molecular biology techniques. We also employ various -omics technologies for understanding, troubleshooting, and debottlenecking our designed systems.
We are looking for highly talented and motivated Organism Engineers to join our development processes, including strain design, DNA/strain construction, evaluation of strain performance, and pathway optimization and troubleshooting. The internal title for this position is Organism Engineer 3.
Responsibilities:
- Designing strains to optimize production of chemicals, enzymes and other proteins
- Developing suitable cultivation conditions and assays for screening the performance of your microbes
- Testing the metabolic and physiological performance of your microbes
- Analyzing data to identify limitations and bottlenecks in the performance of your microbes and e-designing strains based on the above
- Using software and leveraging high-throughput robotics to assist in strain construction
- Collaborating with multiple stakeholders across Ginkgo to design, plan and execute demanding strain engineering and screening campaigns
- Rolling up your sleeves, getting in the lab, and debugging any of the above as needed
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, chemical or biological engineering or related field or equivalent industry experience
- Previous success engineering at least one organism
- Can comfortably use software and automated workflows
- Deep understanding of microbial metabolism
- Prior experience with advanced synthetic biology strategies or metabolic engineering of industrial yeasts, prokaryotes, and/or filamentous fungi
- Demonstrated history of limitless enthusiasm for synthetic biology and making biology easier to engineer
