This is an office hybrid role based at our Bardstown, KY, location.

What the Role Is

The Senior Packaging Engineer will manage and lead packaging activities and projects for new product development, and all packaging activities for materials, process, design, equipment and/or validation of the packaging of distilled spirits products. This individual will work closely with marketing, engineering, production, supply chain, new product development and material vendors to ensure that ideas generated by marketing are suitable to the production environment. Work includes, but is not limited to, standardization of packaging components, bottle and case design, new package launch, and process improvements related to packaging. This includes taking ownership of the process from start to finish.

How You Will Spend Your Time?

  • Perform a wide variety of complex duties, in a multi-functional environment of design and testing for packaging of distilled spirits products
  • Role includes supporting the product packaging function across all Heaven Hill facilities
  • Work collaboratively with the mechanical engineer to ensure packaging components operate safely and efficiently on the packaging equipment
  • Provide material, design and technical expertise from conceptualization of initial design options, execution of design, and modifications of packaging design through implementation
  • Analyzes concepts to ensure product performance specifications meet customer requirements
  • Detail designs to ensure manufacturability, proper dimensioning, and tolerance analysis
  • Convert customer needs into new product concept solutions
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain in the research and development of new packaging concepts to grow and expand business opportunities
  • Develop prototypes of concepts and subcomponent mechanisms
  • Represents packaging and labeling as primary contact on projects with cross-functional teams, acting as subject matter expert in the development, control, and maintenance of company packaging standards
  • Develop capability matrix and bottling SKU library
  • Serve as packaging consultant for co-packers, contract bottlers, etc.
  • Participate and/or lead cross-functional teams to implement new package designs and package changes
  • Work collaboratively with Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain and packaging material suppliers on packaging design to standardize bottles, labels, closures, and cases
  • Ensure all technical documentation, including package protocols and validation of package designs is compliant. Consults on manufacturing processes and validations.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Engineering to assess and implement new technology in large scale manufacturing environment
  • Provide engineering support, facilitating tests during FAT, line commissioning and final acceptance
  • Provide supply chain support, identifying and qualifying suppliers, including alternate suppliers in case of emergency
  • Development of case stack pattern on a pallet
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate database of bottle, labels, closure, and case drawings
  • Some travel required for qualification and buy-off of new packaging at vendor locations and other Heaven Hill facilities

Who You Are…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering or related field of study including Mechanical, Industrial, Materials, Packaging, or related engineering discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a package engineering role
  • Experience with automated and/or semi-automated packaging equipment, processes, data base driven labeling systems
  • Must be highly analytical and possess excellent problem-solving skills, sound decision making skills, and ability to meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to interpret and apply written procedures and standards
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent team player with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Must be a highly motivated and self-directed individual

Valued but not Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Project
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement concepts
  • Previous experience in packaging engineering requirements
  • Basic Project Management Experience
