JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE OF POSITION
Provides radiological support coverage for maintenance, operational, and routine work that involves radioactive materials. Provides monitoring for Radiation, Contamination, and Airborne Radioactivity, in the work-place as required by Radiological program procedures and 10 CFR 835. This level technician is considered skilled/fully proficient. Expected to provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
- High School education with courses in algebra, biology, chemistry, and/or physics or GED equivalency.
- Requires a minimum of three (3) years related experience.
- Must be DOE RCT Core qualified or equivalent.
Additional Position Requirements:
- Subject to shift work
- Qualified for Respirator
- Physical requirements to handle and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other equipment and assist others in work locations, commensurate with assignment.
- Asbestos Worker Certification / DOE Core RCT Qualification / Respirator Wearer
Other Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to plan and support high-hazard radiological work including working knowledge of the basis and use of engineered controls (e.g., localized ventilation, temporary shielding, and containment devices).
- Extensive demonstrated experience and technical working knowledge in radiation protection principles and practices.
- Extensive demonstrated experience in radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control and other operational health physics activities.
- Working knowledge of applicable Department of Energy (DOE) orders and/or NRC regulations.
- Demonstrated fully proficient experience in the use of protective clothing and respiratory protective equipment.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and work ethic including reliability as an independent worker, as a team member, and as a mentor of less-skilled RCTs.
- Proficient written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to assume ownership and responsibility or assigned projects, areas, and tasks.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain D.O.E. Access authorization.
- Must be able to successfully complete biannual Oral Boards.
- Must be able to successfully complete the training requirements of the Sr. Radiological Control Technician.
- Must be able to successfully complete and maintain all other qualifications deemed necessary.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS
- Maintain a safe and healthful work environment by following established safe work practices and procedures; investigating and reporting identified safety concerns or situations.
- Adhere to standards contained in the Company “Code of Conduct,” Company EEO practices, and DOE directives.
- Provides assigned technical, administrative, or functional support to the Radiation Protection management team.
- Performs planning of low- and moderate-hazard radiological work, monitoring of radioactive work areas, generation of radiological work permits, establishing radiological work control and monitoring of radiological workers with minimal direction or supervision.
- Performs planning of high-hazard radiological work and provides recommended controls to supervision and persons in charge (PICs).
- Routinely provides radiation protection support for planned moderate and high hazard radiological work with minimal direction.
- Performs quantitative measurements and documents results for radioactive materials shipments, free release of excess material and waste from the site.
- Supports Environmental, Health & Safety (ES&H) activities in the field including but not limited to atmospheric monitoring, safety evaluations, self-assessments, and chemical hygiene control programs.
- Makes recommendations for corrective actions to reduce contamination levels, radiation levels, radioactive airborne levels with the ALARA concept.
- Proficient in a wide variety of radiation protection and associated ES&H support activities
- Mentors and assists employees in on-the-job training in the areas of: group procedures for radiation monitoring, contamination control, external exposure control and emergency response, radiation work permits, and facility design.
- Performs a variety of tasks complex in nature related to radiological, industrial, and chemical safety.
- Maintains knowledge of and demonstrates ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures and applicable regulations and performs assigned duties in a safe manner.
- Actively participates in Safety Work Groups.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable company and client technical specifications, procedures, human performance and safety standards and expectations.
- Promotes a Safety Conscious Work Environment but understanding and complying with company policy and procedures.
- Participate in pre-job briefs at the start of shifts and for scheduled work activities. Perform shift turnover duties with assigned personnel or supervision.
- Participate in two-minute drills and/or Take a Minute (TAM) in the field prior to the performance of work activities.
- Immediately notify Supervision, required site contacts, and prepare documentation of ANY safety or nuclear safety concerns.
- Responsible for progress of all assigned work; identify and solve minor issues; and report major issues to supervision for resolution.
- Perform dose rate, contamination, and airborne radioactivity surveys.
- Provide job coverage for work groups to minimize personnel exposure.
- Provide briefings and guidance to plant personnel to prohibit unplanned exposure to radioactive material.
- Participate in investigations of events as required and provide requested statements.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
