Job Title: Plant Utility Operator


OVERVIEW: As a Utility Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining plant utility systems to support the manufacturing plant’s needs. Examples of associated equipment supporting the plants’ needs include boilers, chillers, air compressors, RTU, HVAC, water systems, fire protection equipment, plant electrical gear, and wastewater systems. Perform maintenance and preventive maintenance on all utility systems & support manufacturing maintenance personnel when needed.


You Will:

  • Operate and monitor boilers and related equipment.
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor chillers, large air conditioning units, RTU, & HVAC units.
  • Operate and maintain air compressors, water systems, fire protection equipment, and plant electrical gear.
  • Operate and maintain plant wastewater systems, read and interpret meters and gauges, and regulate plant effluent. Monitor, repair, and maintain wastewater system lift stations. Monitor and adjust DAF and EQ systems to stay in regulatory compliance.
  • Perform maintenance and preventive maintenance on all utility systems including belt changes, lubrication of equipment, cleaning, pump repair, system analysis, air filter changes, coil cleaning, etc.
  • Diagnose and correct utility problems when possible. Contact outside contractors to repair utility problems when appropriate.
  • Notify supervisor of utility & wastewater equipment needing additional attention or repairs.
  • Perform pipefitting work as needed.
  • Support manufacturing maintenance personnel when needed.
  • Request parts and materials from supervisor/storeroom. Complete work orders.
  • Run labs on water, steam, wastewater, and air.
  • Assist in the training of others as needed in all areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement, monitor, improve, and uphold high standards of safety in all aspects of maintenance routine.
  • Ensure appropriate processes and standards are in place and followed to keep producing quality food, maintain high performance, and generate robust records.
  • Report out on top downtime for each shift and communicate ongoing issues to the incoming shift.
  • Exhibit and foster a presence on the floor and proactive team that works with operators & maintenance personnel to troubleshoot and solve problems in real-time.
  • Lead troubleshooting for top downtime items, identify, and correct root cause.
  • Provide support to vendors and technicians on-site for commissioning, training, PMs, routine, and non-routine work. Help peers learn hands-on any time they can.
  • Uphold high standards of conduct while providing support to operations.
  • Participate in cross functional teams focused on reducing downtime, improving performance, and resolving quality concerns. Take advantage of situations where your expertise can provide coaching or teaching moments to teams.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activity, utility activity, changes, and resolution of problems on equipment.
  • This position will require active involvement in daily operations and taking advantage of teaching moments to help operators learn and develop.
  • Work with the maintenance manager to get the tools needed to be successful and be an advocate for the shift when opportunities arise that require support from the plant leadership team.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical or trade school, military training and experience, degree in electrical or mechanical field, or certificate for similar is preferred.
  • 5+ years of utility experience preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have personal knowledge of industrial utility systems.
  • Knowledge of thermal processing is a plus, with emphasis on UHT.
  • Experience troubleshooting large industrial systems.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electro-mechanical components and systems. Pneumatic components and systems. Process instrumentation.
  • Experience coordinating maintenance routines, planned/preventative maintenance strategies, and compiling accurate maintenance reports.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of CMMS systems.
  • The ideal candidate will be CIRO certified.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate well to all levels throughout the plant; written and verbal.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating a high standard of safety.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to move from startup environment to full production operations.
  • Must be able to prioritize, multi-task, and problem solve in a fast-paced environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and listen. Physical demands of the position are heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, climbing, and bending flexibility. Must be able to work safely in varying temperature extremes since equipment is often located on roof tops and other unconditioned spaces. Safely work on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other types of lifts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
