Professional Writing Tutor (ENG-2 Positions)

School of Humanities, Arts, & English

Tsaile Campus


Duty Schedule:

Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, possibly late hours and weekends.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The role of the Professional Tutor is to assist writing faculty with instructional materials via tutoring sessions for students. Tutoring students individually or in groups either in-person or on-line, direct students on the use of the computer assisted instruction, assist in the collection of writing resource materials for student use, conduct academic writing workshops, and submit student progress reports to coordinator and referring personnel. The tutor will also facilitate structured writing sessions and/or writing strategies. Will share best writing practices/techniques with other Professional Peer writing tutors.

This position is funded by the AZ Remedial Education Grant #806.

TUTORIAL DUTIES:

  • Facilitate and guide discussion with students on a one-to-one or group setting on writing assignments without doing the work for the student.
  • Assist students by appointment (example, if referred) using Tutor scheduling - ConExEd.
  • Apply easier to understand instruction to help students understand writing course content.
  • Assist students with online courses, such as Blackboard and online courses.
  • Collaborate with Learning Center staff, Student Affairs staff, and faculty to improve tutoring skills.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the tutoring sessions.
  • Assist in workshops or outreach activities conducted by Professional Writing Tutor.COLLABAORATION
  • Meet with writing instructors to maintain any necessary course syllabiior subject materials to implement during tutoring sessions.
  • Consult with faculty concerning students' lack of progress and, when appropriate, request suggestions for materials for providing assist to the tutoring.REPORTING
  • Enter information on tutor platform of students who were tutored.
  • Compile tutor reports; tutor logs and tutoring session evaluation, and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.
  • Complete time and effort reports and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.
  • Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions then submit to supervisor at the end of each week.
  • Sign in/out on Paylogics application for documentation of hours worked.OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Assist in general operation of the Learning Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

One year tutoring and/or classroom teaching experience and work with adult learners.

Associate of Arts degree.

Preferred:

Level or higher in CRLA - International Tutor Training Program Certification.

One yer experience in tutoring English writing.

Bachelor of Arts degree, preferred in English major/minor.

Knowledge:

Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from various education, cultural, and social backgrounds.

Adhere to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 which ensures students' identification and records are protected.

Respect confidentiality at all times.

Skills:

Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.

Skill in decision making and problem solving.

Skill in interpersonal relations.

Skill in working with diverse student population.

Skill in oral and written communications.

Skill in relating instructional materials to students.

Skill in presenting materials in an organized manner.
