Job Description

This position is responsible for implementing and coordinating pre-written curriculum for assigned sessions of summer day camps for children ages 4 - 17. Work hours are primarily between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday. Must be available to work the entire summer: This includes staff training days prior to opening of camp during the week of June 24, 8 weeks of camp from July 1 through August 23, 2024, with the option of working the week of August 26.

Job Functions: 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  •  Assists with implementation and evaluation of camp programs as designed by Zoo Camp Director and Assistant Zoo Camp Director with primary focus on chosen themes.
  • Works collaboratively with fellow instructors to facilitate the use of age- appropriate activities, resources, and materials for camps.
  • Prepares required materials, including supplies and crafts.
  • Leads daily class activities, including tours of the zoo, games, and crafts, and manages behavior of campers during guest speakers and animal demos.
  • Maintains records of materials needed and submits requests in a timely manner.
  •  Adheres to zoo policies and protocols.

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  •  A minimum of one year’s experience working with children in a school, zoo, nature center, childcare, or other educational setting.
  • Excellent public speaking and organization skills; self-directed, flexible, good record keeping ability.
  •  Ability to demonstrate and communicate scientific and conservation messages to children in a lively, engaging manner.

  •  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  •  Ability to work autonomously, as well as with a team, and achieve established goals.
