General Summary of Position
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a key member of the interdisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered acute nursing care to individuals with a variety of medical issues or who are preparing for or recovering from surgery. The LPN as a collaborative team member in partnership with and under the supervision of the registered nurse.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizes, prioritizes, and cares for groups of patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Establishes effective relationships with the patient/ family to facilitate the development a patient centered care plan unique to the individuals care needs.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare team members to implement a plan of care and education to maintain and restore health and prevent complications.
  • Provides patient and family education about measures of health promotion, maintenance, and restoration to promote comfort.
  • Provides direct nursing care to patients as assigned which includes collect assessment data, administration of medications, and performs activities of daily living including, among others bathing, mouth care, feeding patients, range of motion, walking patients and transporting patients, in accordance with Nursing Department/Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performs sterile and non-sterile treatments in accordance with Hospital policy, including but not limited to: tube feedings, ostomy care, Foley catheter insertion/care, hang/monitor/regulate IV's, TPN and site care, maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction, chest physiotherapy, dressing changes and wound care, splinting (emergency department only), oxygen administration, suctioning, and blood/glucose monitoring.
  • Reports changes in patient status to the RN and members of the health care team as they occur and communicate information in verbal and written reports that describe care delivered to the patient.
  • Collaborates with the RN on an on-going basis regarding effective nursing interventions and patient care.
  • Provides direction and supervision of the patient care associates, demonstrates professional judgement, problem solving techniques, time-management principles, and delegates appropriately.
  • Serves as an advocate for the patient and family.
  • Participates in the orientation of staff members/students as designated by the Nurse Manager and participates in continuing education.
  • Contributes to the implementation of the unit objectives and performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly patient/unit environment.
  • Fosters a healthy work environment within the practice setting and profession.
  • Participates in self and peer review.
  • Promotes professional engagement.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Must be quantifiable (i.e. minimum of one (1) year experience within a Rehabilitation or acute setting). required
    • New graduates considered based on student clinical experiences.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure Valid LPN license in the State of Maryland Upon Hire required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • The ideal candidate will have sound judgment skills with reference to Nursing ethical guidelines and patient care.
    • The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) must be compassionate towards patients and family members, have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team of various medical professionals.
